Bevis Frond - Ear Song Ear Song
Psych Used - LP RECK 20 Reckless
1990 US-Only Compilation, Still In Shrink. β€œIt's Actually No Faint Praise To Say That Ear Song Is Half Of One Of The Best Bevis Frond Albums Ever Made β€” And An Eighth Of Another Best Album From The Same Band. It Is Also One Of The Odder Releases In The Catalog Of A Very Odd Artist. To Start With, One Side Of Ear Song Is Actually Two Of The Best Cuts From The Previous Album, Any Gas Faster, Released Exactly As Before. The Other Side Is One Of Those Same Songs, Two Older Numbers, And One New Song, Recorded Live In One Of The Bevis Frond's Infrequent Live Appearances. On The Original Vinyl Release, Side One Is Recorded At 45 Rpm, Side Two At 33. What Makes The Album Essential Is Obviously Side Two, The First Chance For Most Dedicated Bevis Frond Fans To Hear The Live Sound Of Nick Saloman And Company. That Sound Is Surprisingly Powerful And Accurate, Though Presented Here On Four Very Different Tunes. The Driving Psychedelia Of "I've Got Eyes In The Back Of My Head" Is Followed By The Slow Grind Of "Mediaeval Sienese Acid Blues," Which Is Well-Enough Done But Not Exactly The Most Innovative Or Interesting Piece In The Bevis Frond's Catalog. The Payoff Track, The One That Makes Listeners Want To Hug Their Speakers, Is The Live Version Of "Olde World." This Was One Of The Fastest And Best Tracks On Any Gas Faster, And The Frantic Version Here Proves That It Could Be Played Even Faster And Better. This Is Nick Saloman The Punk-Pop Artist At His Best, With Adrian Shaw Rumbling Out An Intricate Bassline That Greatly Improves The Song. After This Track, The Closing "Radio Bloodbeast" Is A Bit Of A Letdown, A Decent Mid-Tempo Guitar Freak-Out But Not Quite Up To The Same Standard. Still, Any Fan Of This Band Who Can Find A Copy Of Ear Song Should Snap It Up. One Great Track Does Not An Album Make, But The 20 Minutes Of Music That Comprise Side Two Is The Only Record Most Will Hear Of The Live Bevis Frond Circa 1990.” – Richard Foss, All Music Guide... more details
