Cherry, Don - Relativity Suite Relativity Suite
Jazz Used - LP JCOA LP 1006 JCOA
1973 Purple Label With Silver Print Original. Shrink Wrap Intact. Appears Unplayed. Tiny Cut Corner. “Don Cherry Appeared On The First Two Releases By JCOA, Albums Under The Leadership Of Label Founders Carla Bley And Michael Mantler, So Their Decision To Commission Him For The Third Album Seemed A Wise Move, As Indeed It Was. Using Many Of The Same Musicians Who Contributed To Those Records And Were Then Established As The Loose Collective Called The Jazz Composer's Orchestra, Cherry Molded Into A Suite A String Of The Pieces He'd Been Composing And Performing In The Previous Few Years. Under The Tutelage Of Pandit Pran Nath, Cherry Had Been Studying And Increasingly Using Indian Karnatic Singing In His Recordings And Concerts; He Begins This Album With A Similarly Derived Chant. As The Energy Heats Up, The Orchestra Launches Into The Captivating "Mali Doussn'gouni," Featuring A Raging Tenor Solo By Frank Lowe And Delightful Vocal Acrobatics By Cherry. When It Slowly Dissolves Into His Achingly Beautiful "Desireless," Highlights Of Side Two Include Selene Fung's Lovely Work On The Ching, A Chinese Koto-Like Instrument, And Ed Blackwell's Exuberant New Orleans Marching Patterns On The Concluding Number. While Not As Breathtaking Or Cohesive As His Eternal Rhythm, Relativity Suite Almost Matches That Release In Its First Half And Contains Many A Worthwhile Joy. Recommended.” Brian Olewnick, AMG.... more details

Cherry, Don - Symphony For Improvisors Symphony For Improvisors
Jazz Used - LP BST 84247 Blue Note
1973 Blue Label Stereo Reissue Of His Great 1966 Recording. Appears Glossy, Unplayed. Van Gelder Stamped In Both Side Of Dead Wax. “For His Second Album, Symphony For Improvisers, Don Cherry Expanded His Complete Communion Quartet -- Tenor Saxophonist Gato Barbieri, Bassist Henry Grimes, And Drummer Ed Blackwell -- To A Septet, Adding Vibraphonist Karl Berger, Bassist Jean François Jenny-Clark, And Tenor Saxophonist Pharoah Sanders (Who Frequently Plays Piccolo Here). The Lineup Has A Real International Flavor, Since Barbieri Was From Argentina, Berger From Germany, And Jenny-Clark From France; Cherry Had Gigged Regularly With All Three During His 1964-1965 Sojourn In Europe, And Brought Them To New York To Record. With All The Added Firepower, It's Remarkable That Symphony For Improvisers Has The Same Sense Of Shared Space And Controlled Intelligence As Its Predecessor, Even When Things Are At Their Most Heated. Once Again, Cherry Sets Up The Album As Two Continuous Medleys That Fuse Four Compositions Apiece, Which Allows The Group's Improvisational Energy And Momentum To Carry Straight Through The Entire Program. The "Symphony For Improvisers" Suite Is The Most Raucous Part Of Cherry's Blue Note Repertoire, And The "Manhattan Cry" Suite Pulls Off The Widest Mood Shifts Cherry Had Yet Attempted In That Format. Even Though The Album Is Full Of Passionate Fireworks, There's Also A Great Deal Of Subtlety -- The Flavors Added To The Ensemble By Berger's Vibes And Sanders' Piccolo, For Example, Or The Way Other Instrumental Voices Often Support And Complement A Solo Statement. Feverish But Well-Channeled, This Larger-Group Session Is Probably Cherry's Most Gratifying For Blue Note.” Steve Huey, AMG.... more details
