Evans, Bill - How My Heart Sings! How My Heart Sings!
Jazz New - LP 9473 Riverside
Sealed 1963 Stereo Original. This LP Came In A Collection With Three Other Bill Evans Titles Which Were All Sealed. We Opened One Of The LPs To Check The Labels Which Were Deep Groove Original And Assume The Other Three Titles Are Also Original Pressings. “Recorded In May And June Of 1962, At The Same Time As The Moonbeams Sessions, How My Heart Sings Shows A Different Side Of The Bill Evans Trio Than That All-Ballads Album. Here, The Eight Selections Have A Much More Mid- And Even Up-Tempo Flair. Israel Appears More Comfortable In These Settings To Be Sure, As He Is The Kind Of Bassist That Relegates Himself Deeply Into The Rhythm Section, Sublimating Himself To The Pianist. In Evans' Own Words, The Band's Desire Was To "Provide A More Singing Sound" In This Material. The Set Begins With A Lyrical Waltz In The Title Track. Evans Himself Comments In The Liner Notes That It "Contains A Delightful 4/4 Interlude Framed By A Delightful 3/4 Lyric Line." Nowhere Does He Discuss His Solo That Literally Ripples In Delicate Waves Off The Middle Register, And Motian's Stick Work Shimmies Up The Rhythm And Allows It To Truly Dance And Sing. There Are A Number Of Standards Here, Including "Summertime," Which Sounds So Different With Its Mid-Tempo Opening And Israel's Flaunting Bass Vamp In Front Of The Piano. When Evans Gets To The Melody He Is Following The Swinging Skip Of Motian's Drums, And He Digs Deep Into Inverting The Melody Line With A Slew Of Arpeggios And Short, Choppy Phrases. On Cole Porter's "Everything I Love," Evans Takes The Snap In The Tune And Breaks It, Committing It To A Driving Swing And Vaunting Lyrical Gem That Has Three Seemingly Unresolvable Harmonic Problems In The Center That Turn Out To Be A Moebius Strip In Evan's Chromatic Language. This Is A Tough Recording; It Flies In The Face Of The Conventions Evans Himself Has Set, And Yet Retrains The Deep, Nearly Profound Lyricism That Was The Pianist's Trademark.” Thom Jurek, AMG... more details

Evans, Bill - Conversations With Myself Conversations With Myself
Jazz Used - LP V6 8526 Verve
Stunning 1963 Deep Groove Stereo Original Housed In A Laminated Gatefold Cover. “Often Stirring Controversy For No Key Or Good Reason, Conversations With Myself Has Bill Evans Utilizing The Sound-On-Sound Technique Of Reel-To-Reel Tape Recording Available In The 1960s To Play Simultaneous Twin Pianos. It's An Interesting Combination Of Counterpointed Lines And Chords That Evans Employs, With Differing Tempos And Shadings That Complement Rather Than Contrast. Additionally, The Usage Of Angular Dialect À La Thelonious Monk And The Witty Discourse He Can Conjure With His Own Styles Thicken And Broaden The Horizons Of The Usually Spare Harmonic Inventions The Pianist Expresses On His Own. With The Overdubbing, Evans Achieves True Interplay And Counterpoint On His Own, Starting With The Rich Harmonies Of Monk's "'Round Midnight," Where He Adds Alternate Lines In A Slightly Ramped-Up Midtempo Take. "Blue Monk" Has Evans Sounding Like A Guitarist In His Single-Note And Chordal Discourse, Perhaps Influenced By Wes Montgomery. The Spacious "Spartacus Love Theme" Is Rendered Beautifully In Spite Of The Extra Tracking, "Stella By Starlight" Uses A More Unified Approach Between The Two Piano Tracks, And Is A Chamber Type Reading, While "Hey There" Employs Off-Minor Options That Are Not Standardized By Any Means. The Stealth And Deliberate Shadings Of The Lone Evans Original, "N.Y.C.'S No Lark," Do Contrast With The Energetic High-Octave Chords On "How About You?" In A Music That Is Certainly Busy For Evans. Certainly One Of The More Unusual Albums In The Discography Of An Artist Whose Consistency Is As Evident As Any In Modern Jazz, And Nothing Should Dissuade You From Purchasing This One Of A Kind Album That In Some Ways Set A Technological Standard For Popular Music -- And Jazz -- To Come.” Michael G. Nastos, AMG.... more details

Jazz New - LP V6 8578 Verve
Sealed 1964 Stereo, Laminated Gatefold Original (Label Variation Unknown). Pristine Copy. Evans, Piano; Gary Peacock, Bass; Paul Motian, Drums. “His First Three-Piece Recording For Verve. The Effort Spotlights The Trio’s Communal And Intuitive Musical Discourse, Hinging On An Uncanny Ability Of The Musicians To Simultaneously Hear And Respond. All The More Interesting, Evans Had Not Interacted In This Setting Before, Having Most Recently Worked With Chuck Israels (Bass) And Larry Bunker (Drums). The Personable Opener "Little Lulu" Features The Aggregate Melodically Moulding Individual And Distinct Sonic Characteristics. Evans' Nimble And Emphatic Syncopation Is Not Only Ably Supported, But Framed By Peacock's Expressive Runs And Motian's Acute Sense Of Timing. "A Sleeping Bee" Is One Of The Collection's Most Endearing Selections As The Groove Playfully Scintillates Surrounding Some Hauntingly Poignant Chord Changes. Evans Bandies Back And Forth With Peacock, The Latter Likewise Providing A Stellar Solo. "Always" Captures A Similar Effervescence As The Instrumentalists Ebb And Flow In Synchronicity.” Lindsay Planer, All Music.... more details

We Have Play Graded This LP And Find Ourselves Asking Why We Would Ever Want To Buy Reissues That Don't Come Close To The Sheer Immediacy In These Grooves. There Is A Magic On This Original Pressing That Current Reissues Made From Almost 50 Year Old Master Tapes Cannot Match. Side One Has Some Light Crackles At The Start Of Track Two And Light Noise For Part Of The very Quiet Passage In Track Three. Side Two Has A Light Swishing Sound For The First Few Revolutions Which Disappears. We Would Not Normally Offer Records In This Visual Condition For Sale, But As This Is A Landmark Jazz Album That Is Still In Pretty Darn Great Playing Shape We Decided To Offer It. Originals Of This Lp Have Sold As High As $1000 Plus On epay.... more details

Evans, Bill - Spring Leaves Spring Leaves
Jazz Used - LP M 47034 Milestone
1976 2LP Gatefold Compilation. Rear Jacket Has A Hint Of Ring Wear, Both LPs Appear Unplayed. “Bill Evans's Greatest Trio Was The One With Bassist Scott LaFaro And Drummer Paul Motian During 1959-61. In Addition To Their Justifiably Famous Village Vanguard Recordings (Performed Just Two Weeks Before LaFaro's Death In A Car Accident), Evans's Trio Also Recorded The Two Studio Albums (Originally Titled Portrait In Jazz And Explorations) That Are Included On This Two-LP Set. The Interplay Between The Three Musicians (With Lafaro Assuming As Important A Role As Evans) Was Very Influential On Rhythm Sections From The 1960s Up To The Present. "Autumn Leaves" (Heard In Two Versions), "When I Fall In Love," "Blue In Green," "Nardis" And "How Deep Is The Ocean" Are Among The Many Highlights Of This Very Significant Body Of Work.” – Scott Yanow, All Music Guide.... more details

Rare 1974 Canadian Original Recorded At Camp Fortune, Gatineau Hills, Quebec, Canada. Appears Unplayed. “Pianist Bill Evans Had Had The Same Musicians In His Trio (Bassist Eddie Gomez And Drummer Marty Morell) For Over Five Years When He Was Caught At A Quebec Concert That Was Broadcast Over Canadian Radio. This LP Finds The Trio In Its Typically Explorative, Occasionally Introspective And Generally Swinging Form. The Repertoire, Other Than "Morning Glory," Sticks To Material That Evans Had Previously Recorded Including Several Of His Own Compositions, But These Renditions Are Both Fresh And Spirited.” Scott Yanow, All Music Guide.... more details

Evans, Bill - Trio 64 Trio 64
Jazz Used - LP V6 8578 Verve
Stunning 1964 Deep Groove Stereo Original Housed In A Laminated Gatefold Jacket. One Of His Underrated Albums. Bill Evans, Piano; Gary Peacock, Bass; Paul Motian, Drums.

Beautiful 1983 2LP Gatefold Original. Both LPs Appear Unplayed. Evans, Bill - At Shelly's Manne Hole At Shelly's Manne Hole
Jazz New - LP 487 Riverside
Factory Sealed 1965 Turqoise & Silver Orpheum Label Stereo Original Housed In A Stereo-Stickered Mono Cover. Bill Evans, Piano; Chuck Israels, Bass; Larry Bunker, Drums. “Although The Scott Lafaro-Paul Motian Lineup Of The Bill Evans Trio Is Generally Considered To Be The Strongest, Chuck Israels And Larry Bunker Make A Strong Case Of Their Own On At Shelly's Manne-Hole, A 1964 Release That Finds The Entire Band In Classic Form. This Particular Trio May Lack Some Of The Sheer Combustive Force Of The Better-Known Lineup, But It Is, If Possible, Even More Sensitive, Melancholic, And Nostalgic Than The Previous Band. The Leadoff Track, "Isn't It Romantic," Is One Of Evans' Finest Moments, With The Gently Swinging Theme Leading Into A Strong, If Restrained, Solo From Israels. Over Bunker's Sensitive Brush Work, Evans Comments Briefly And Beautifully On The Theme Before Returning To The Head. The Band's Readings Of Such Classics As "'Round Midnight," "Stella By Starlight," And "All The Things You Are" Are Wonderful, But It Is The Lesser-Known Tracks, Such As "Swedish Pastry" And The Aforementioned "Isn't It Romantic," That Makes This Recording So Valuable. Jazz Is Rarely As Sensitive Or As Melodic As This. Another Classic From Bill Evans And Company.” Daniel Gioffre, All Music Guide.... more details

Evans, Bill - Portrait In Jazz Portrait In Jazz
Jazz New - LP 12-315 Riverside
Factory Sealed 1959 Deep Groove Mono Original With Crisp Corners. “The First Of Two Studio Albums By The Bill Evans-Scott Lafaro-Paul Motian Trio (Both Of Which Preceded Their Famous Engagement At The Village Vanguard), This Portrait In Jazz Reissue Contains Some Wondrous Interplay, Particularly Between Pianist Evans And Bassist Lafaro, On The Two Versions Of "Autumn Leaves." Other Than Introducing Evans' "Peri's Scope," The Music Is Comprised Of Standards, But The Influential Interpretations Were Far From Routine Or Predictable At The Time. Lafaro And Motian Were Nearly Equal Partners With The Pianist In The Ensembles And Their Versions Of Such Tunes As "Come Rain Or Come Shine," "When I Fall In Love," And "Someday My Prince Will Come" (Which Preceded Miles Davis' Famous Recording By A Couple Years) Are Full Of Subtle And Surprising Creativity. A Gem.” Scott Yanow, All Music Guide.... more details

Evans, Bill - Trio 64 Trio 64
Jazz Used - LP V6 8578 Verve
1964 Laminated Gatefold Stereo Original. Vinyl Appears Glossy And Unplayed.Small Top Right Corner Dent. Bill Evans, Piano; Gary Peacock, Bass; Paul Motian, Drums.
