Impressions - The Young Mod's Forgotten Story The Young Mod's Forgotten Story
Soul New - LP CRS 8003 Curtom
Sealed, Rare Original Featuring Curtis Mayfield. Arranged By Donny Hathaway And Johnny Pate. “The Title Read Like A Concept Album (And The Opener Seemed To Introduce A Larger Idea At Work), But The Young Mods' Forgotten Story Hung Together Only As The Usual (Read: Brilliant) Late-'60s LP From The Impressions: A Few Solid Songs With A Social Or Inspirational Viewpoint And The Rest Featuring Curtis Mayfield's Continuing Exploration Of Love In All Its Forms. Two Of The Message Songs Were Among The Best Of The Group's History; "Choice Of Colors" Tenderly Investigated Black Feelings About Race, While The Party Song "Mighty Mighty (Spade & Whitey)" Gave Blacks And Whites A Rare Chance To Celebrate Empowerment Together. Mayfield's Romantic Songs Ranged Farther Than Usual, From The Innocent, Delicate "The Girl I Find" (Complete With Turtledove Cries) To A Deconstruction Of The End Of A Long Affair ("Seven Years") To The Overbearing "Jealous Man," All With Great Arrangements Provided By Veteran Johnny Pate And Newcomer Donny Hathaway. (Hathaway's Addition Didn't Alter The Impressions' Sound Significantly, Though His Harmonic Expertise And Affinity For The Church Do Find Their Way Into A Couple Of Tracks.) Only One Song, "Wherever You Leadeth Me," Found The Group Treading Water (It Could Just As Easily Have Appeared Five Years Earlier). The Rest Was Intriguing Late-'60s Soul From One Of The Best Acts In The Business.” John Bush, AMG.... more details

Impressions - Preacher Man Preacher Man
Soul New - LP CRS 8016 Curtom
Sealed 1973 Original, Small Saw Notch. “This Is An Unexpectedly Fine Album, Particularly In Light Of The Circumstances Under Which It Was Recorded. The Impressions Had Just Finished A European Tour In Late 1972 When Leroy Hutson, Who Had Been Curtis Mayfield's Successor In Lineup, Left Them To Pursue A Solo Career. So It Was Two-Man Version Of The Impressions -- Consisting Of Sam Gooden And Fred Cash -- Who Went Into The Studio In Early 1973 With Producer Rich Tufo, With Cash Handling The Lead Vocals. Tufo As Producer And Arranger, As Well As Songwriter For A Good Chunk Of The Album, Surrounded The Pair With Some Of The Best Music And Overdubbed Background Vocals Of The Group's History; And The Result, Instead Of A Threadbare Effort By A Reduced Lineup Version Of The Impressions, Was Something New And Amazingly Bold, Never More So Than On The Ten-Minute "Thin Line," Which Opened Side Two Of The LP -- This Was Getting Into The Same Realms Of Conceptual Soul That Marvin Gaye Had Remade His Career With On What's Going On. Preacher Man, Which Could Have Been An Effort To Buy Time For A Group In Disarray, Ended Up Being A Strong Artistic Statement In Its Own Right, And A Record That Was Well Worth Owning, And Opened A New Era For The Group.” Bruce Eder, AMG.... more details

Impressions - Check Out Your Mind Check Out Your Mind
Soul Used - LP CRS 8006 Curtom
Beautiful 1970 Heavy Vinyl Original, Saw Cut. A Lesser-Known Gem From The Impressions "Check Out Your Mind" Was The Group's Last Album With Curtis Mayfield In The Lineup, And The Sound Here Follows Heavily From The Young Mods And This Is My Country Years. A Heavier Take On The Trio's Soul Stylings Than Their Work Over At ABC In The Mid 60s, Pushed Into More Heady Political Territory, Yet Still Informed With An Unmatched Approach To Harmony Soul. Arrangements Are By Riley Hampton And Gary Slabo, And They've Got Some Great Psychedelic Soul Touches That Are A Perfect Precursor To Curtis Mayfield's Solo Work To Follow On Curtom. A Great Groove That Steps Out Wonderfully With An Undercurrent Of Funk In The Mix. Henry Gibson Plays Some Great Congas On The Set, Again Hinting At The Mayfield Sound To Come. Titles Include "Check Out Your Mind", "Madam Mary", "We Must Be In Love", "Only You", "Say You Love Me", "Turn On To Me", "Do You Wanna Win", And "You're Really Something Sadie". Rare.... more details
