James, Joni - Joni Swings Sweet Joni Swings Sweet
Jazz Used - LP SE 3772 MGM
Beautiful 1959 Stereo Original. “A Long-Player Of Up-Tempo And Jazz-Oriented Numbers. Here, James Showcases Her Inimitably Lyrical Interpretations Of A Dozen Well-Known Popular Standards Backed By Both A Full Orchestra As Well As A Smaller Combo. This Is Much In Keeping With The Same Variety That She Utilized During Her Legendary Live Shows — Which Were More Often Than Not Performed To Standing-Room-Only Crowds From Coast To Coast As Well As Abroad. The Album Kicks Off With A Blast As James Bops Her Way Through A High-Energy Reading Of "Somebody Loves Me," Which Sets The Tone For The Entire Effort. That Is Not To Say That Every Number Is Given As Lively An Interpretation. However, From The Laid-Back And Breezy "Sentimental Journey" And "Too Marvelous For Words" To The Lush And Opulent "The Blue Room" And "It Had To Be You," The Singer Is At Full Command And Unquestionably Riveting Throughout. Acquaviva's Arrangements And Choice Of Material Perfectly Capture The Essence Of James' Powerfully Sublime Musicality.” Lindsay Planer, AMG.... more details

James, Joni - In The Still Of The Night In The Still Of The Night
Pop Used - LP SE 3932 MGM
Beautiful Black Label With Rainbow Lettering First Stereo Pressing. Recorded In 1956 And Only Released In Mono At The Time. “In The Still Of The Night, Originally Released On MGM In 1956, Is Practically A Sequel To Joni James' Previous Album, When I Fall In Love... Paired Again With David Terry's Orchestra, James Sings A Dozen Love Songs In Her Sweet, Soft-Spoken Style, Which Never Overwhelms The Listener Or Sacrifices The Song On The Altar Of Showy Technique. Like Many Serious Vocalists Of Her Era, James Embraced The Album Format As An Avenue For Exploring Challenging Material And Sustaining A Mood Or Theme For Longer Than Three Minutes. In The Still Of The Night Is Comparable To A Mood Music Album In Its Effectiveness At Creating A Dreamy, Romantic Atmosphere Suitable For Candlelit Dinners And Quiet Evenings At Home. The Songs Are Traditional Pop Classics Such As "Stardust" And "My Funny Valentine," Painted In Dusky Shades And Hushed Tones.” Greg Adams, AMG.... more details

James, Joni - After Hours After Hours
Jazz New - LP DIW 3010 DIW
New, Unplayed 1993 Japanese Pressing With Obi. While Not Joni James' (Vocals) First Jazz Outing, After Hours (1962) Certainly Holds Its Own As One Of The More Memorable Entries In Her Voluminous MGM Records Catalog. Under The Direction Of Then-Husband, Anthony Acquaviva, The Artist Adopted The Jazz Ethos Of Improvisation, Creating Music More Or Less "In The Moment," Recording Each Of The Dozen Sides On This LP With No Overdubbing Or Studio Trickery. The Only Caveat Being The Harmonica And Support Vocals On "I Almost Lost My Mind." They Were Added In Post-Production Once The Song Had Been Chosen As A Single And Subsequently Issued Prior To The Release Of The Full-Length Album. The Raw Nature Helped Replicate The Instantaneous Spontaneity Of James' Live Shows, As She Consistently Packed Houses From Coast To Coast. The Backing Combo Boasts Of A Team Of West Coast Jazz Icons, Including Pete Jolly (Piano), Howard Roberts (Guitar), And Ralph Penna (Bass). The Percussive Duties Are Split Evenly Between Shelly Manne (Drums) And Milt Holland. They Contribute Considerably To The Essence Of After Hours' Loose And Liberated Arrangements Of Material That Are Significantly Complemented By James' Effortless, Yet Entrancing Intonations. The Entire Record Has A Decidedly Sophisticated Adult Vibe, As Heard On The Breezy "Can't Get Out Of This Mood," "Just One Of Those Things," And "This Heart Of Mine." These Numbers Provide A Balance For The Plaintive "Misty" And "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," Both Prominently Featuring Roberts On Acoustic Guitar.” Lindsay Planer, AMG.... more details

James, Joni - Bossa Nova Style Bossa Nova Style
Jazz Used - LP SE 4286 MGM
Mint 1965 Stereo Original In Shrink Wrap. “Like Many Vocalists Of Her Time, Joni James Embraced The Latin And South American Rhythms That Musically Invaded North America In The Mid-'60s. Her Sublimely Tempered Intonations, Coupled With Chuck Sagle's Equally Enchanting Arrangements, Were Firmly Behind The Critical And Artistic Success Of Bossa Nova Style. The Dozen Sides Which Comprise This Long-Player Reflect James' Versatile Performance Style On Some Of Pop Music's Most Sinuous And Sensual Compositions. Without A Doubt, These Lushly Orchestrated Tracks Reveal The Singer's Penchant For Passionate Material. This May Also Account For Her Successful Performances In Cuba, Mexico, As Well As Central And South America To Primarily Non-English-Speaking Audiences. Much Like Her Decidedly More Masculine Pop Vocal Counterpart, Frank Sinatra, James' Inspired Interpretations Of These Standards Became The Hallmark For Those Who Followed Her Lead. From The Gentle And Languid Readings Of "While We're Young" And The Haunting "Dindi" To The Breezy Samba Of "Once I Loved" Or The Delightfully Lilting "I Could Have Danced All Night," It Very Well Seems That Joni James Has Rarely Been More In Her Element Than She Is Here. Even The Rich And Mellow Arrangement Of Seminal Sides Such As "Girl From Ipanema" Or "My Romance" And "You're Nearer" -- A Pair Of Richard Rodgers/Lorenz Hart Tunes That Conclude This Album -- Are Unmistakably Amended To Suit James' Trademark Easygoing And Unencumbered Style.” Lindsay Planer, AMG.... more details

Pop New - LP E 3755 MGM
Sealed 1960 Mono Original Housed In A Gatefold Cover. “Recorded Shortly After James' Triumphant Engagement At The Prestigious London Palladium. During Her Stay, An Invitation Was Extended To Record At EMI's Abbey Road Facility. This Would Prove Doubly Fortuitous, As Not Only Could The Studio Incorporate The Expansive Ensemble, But Also The Entire Project Could Be Successfully Achieved At A Fraction Of The Expenditure A Similar Commitment Would Have Cost Stateside. After Choosing The Material, The U.K.'S Top Pop Arrangers, Geoff Love And Tony Osborne, Were Given The Task Of Scoring The Dozen Pop Standards -- Which They Accomplish With Impeccable Taste -- For The British Orchestra. The Blend Of Warm And Vibrant Acoustics At Abbey Road As Well As The Fresh Scores Of Timeless Material Give James An Inviting Sonic Canvas That She And The Assembled Musicians Impeccably Utilize. The Accompaniment For "Imagination," "But Beautiful," And The Lilting "Hi-Lilli, Hi-Lo" Are A Few Of The More Exquisite And Accomplished Performances, Although It Is Admittedly Difficult To Find Fault With Any Of Them. James Delicately Balances An Authoritative Intonation With Tasteful Restraint And The Purity Of Innocence. Again, The Disc Is Replete With Examples; However, The Enchanting And Airy Woodwind Introduction To "Wait And See" Is Among The More Memorable Passages That Reveal These Recordings Are Far From Rote Or Perfunctory. The Success Of 100 Strings And Joni Would Spawn Several Spinoff Long-Players -- Such As The Thematic 100 Strings And Joni On Broadway (1961) And 100 Strings And Joni In Hollywood (1962). While They Too Would Be Filled With James' Timeless Magic, There Is A Palpable Connection That Remains Within The Grooves Of The Original Project That Would Be Seemingly Impossible To Re-Create.” Lindsay Planer, AMG.... more details
