Jungklas, Rob - Work Songs For A New Moon Work Songs For A New Moon
Pop New - LP 9677 RCA
Sealed 1989 Original. Tiny Cut Out Hole. "If It Had Been Released A Decade Later, In 1999 Instead Of 1989, Memphis Transplant Rob Jungklas' Sophomore Album Might Have Been A Big Hit On Adult Alternative Radio. As It Was, In Spite Of The Album's Well-Crafted Songs And Jungklas' Powerful Vocals, Work Songs For A New Moon Went Largely Unnoticed. Following A Strong 1987 Debut That Received A Modicum Of Critical Acclaim And Little Or No Label Support, Work Songs For A New Moon Carries On With Jungklas' Familiar Lyrical Themes: Love As Salvation, Romance As Religion, And Passion As The Glue That Holds Relationships Together. Songs Like "Man Needs A Woman, Woman Needs A Man" Or "Invent A New Romance" Mix Blue-Eyed Soul And Guitar-Dominated Folk-Rock, The Results Not Unlike, Say, John Hiatt Or Even A Louder, Harder-Rocking Marc Cohn. Jungklas Throws Enough Creative Flourishes Into His Material To Raise It Above Typical Radio Fare, With Moments Such As The Stax-Inspired Keyboard Riffing Of "Water Into Wine" Or The Traditional Instrumentation That Supports "Thirsty At The Well" Breathing Life Into His Songs. His Sense Of Adventure Proved To Be His Undoing, However, As Jungklas' Rootsy Approach To The Conventional Pop Love Song Fell On Deaf Ears, A Symphony Of Mandolin, Dulcimer, And Fretless Bass Sounding As Foreign To The Record-Buying Public As It Did To Radio Programmers. For The (Admittedly Small) Audience That Did Embrace Work Songs For A New Moon, They Discovered An Atypical Singer/Songwriter In The Talented Rob Jungklas.” – Rev. Keith A.
