Magic Sam - Black Magic Black Magic
Blues New - LP DS 620 Delmark
Sealed 1968 Stereo Original. “What Listeners Have Here, Is Frankly Delicious, The Results Of The Surplus Of Talent Magic Sam Possessed: A Triple Threat As A Guitarist, Singer, And Songwriter. This Period Of The Delmark Discography Set A High Standard For Blues Recordings, The Sound Quality And Tight Interplay Among The Musicians Every Bit The Equal Of The Classic Jazz Recordings On Labels Such As Blue Note And Prestige. There Is Nothing Fancy About The Production, And No Gimmicks. It Is Just A Great Band, Allowed To Play The Music Exactly The Way It Wanted To…..The Passage Of Time Also Increases The Musical Value Of This Music, As The Eventual Popularity Of Commercial Projects Such As The Blues Brothers Has Only Served To Dilute The Power Of Urban Blues. Labels Big And Small Have Forsaken This Type Of Honest And Straightforward Production, Preferring To Try Concocting A Higher Level Of Funkiness Through Extravagant Over-Production, Boring Superstar Guest Appearances, And Insipid Studio Practices Such As Prerecorded Rhythm Tracks And Dipstick Guitar Solos Punched In A Note At The Time. Forget All This Jive And Check Out A Track Such As "You Belong To Me," Where The Guitarist Cuts Loose With A Restrained Solo That Sometimes Dances Ahead Of The Beat Like A Country Fiddler While The Band Pumps Away On A Superb Riff. The Players Here, Including The Fine Guitarist Mighty Joe Young, Pianist Lafayette Leake, And A Muscular Rhythm Section, Are The Best Of The Best……” Eugene Chadbourne, AMG.... more details

Magic Sam - The Magic Sam Legacy The Magic Sam Legacy
Blues New - LP DS 651 Delmark
Sealed 1989 Heavy Vinyl Original Featuring Previously Unissued Material. “The 13 Tracks On Magic Sam Legacy Are Culled From Material Initially Discarded From His Two Delmark Studio LPs West Side Soul (1967) And Black Magic (1968). The Principal Caveat Being The John Lee Hooker Inspired "I Feel So Good" And The Spirited Instrumental "Lookin' Good," Both Of Which Date Back To 1966. The Mid-Tempo "Walkin' By Myself" And The Indispensable "Hoochie Coochie Man" Are Among The Best Of The West Side Soul Related Numbers. Shakey Jake (Harmonica) Blows Powerful Harp, Perfectly Complementing Magic Sam's (Guitar/Vocals) Nimble Fretwork. The Guitarist Provides Blistering Yet Purposeful Interjections Setting The Standard In Terms Of Emotive Westside Chicago Blues. "That Ain't It" Is An Exceedingly Soulful Selection Revealing Sam's R&B Leanings And Underrated Vocal Prowess. "I Just Want A Little Bit" Swings Just As Solidly As The Black Magic Version, With This Rendering Sporting A Slightly Looser Reading. The Ringing Tremolo Effect On "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" Makes For One Of The More Interesting Outtakes, Sporting A Few Tasty Runs From The Legendary Lafayette Leake (Piano). His Style Recalls Earlier Contributions As A Staff Musician For Chess Records, Where He Played A Significant Role On Sessions From Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon And Howlin' Wolf Among Others. The Free-Form Nature Of "Blues For Odie Payne" -- The Drummer On Over Half The Material Presented Here -- Gives Not Only Sam A Perfect Platform For His String-Bending And Fiery Fretboard Antics, But Likewise Allows Eddie Shaw (Tenor Sax) To Interpolate Some Equally Clever Melodic Support.” - Lindsay Planer, AMG.... more details
