Mendes, Sergio - Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66
Jazz New - LP SP 4116 A&M
Factory Sealed 1966 Heavy Vinyl Brown Label Stereo Original. “After Bouncing Around Philips, Atlantic, And Capitol Playing Brazilian Jazz Or Searching For An Ideal Blend Of Brazilian And American Pop, Sergio Mendes Struck Gold On His First Try At A&M (Then Not Much More Than The Home Of Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass And The Baja Marimba Band). He Came Up With A Marvelously Sleek, Sexy Formula: Dual American Female Voices Singing In English And Portuguese Over A Nifty Three-Man Bossa Nova Rhythm/Vocal Section And Mendes' Distinctly Jazz-Oriented Piano, Performing Tight, Infectious Arrangements Of Carefully Chosen Tunes From Brazil, The U.S., And The U.K. The Hit Was Jorge Ben's "Mas Que Nada," Given A Catchy, Tight Bossa Nova Arrangement With The Voice Of Lani Hall Soaring Above The Swinging Rhythm Section. But Other Tracks Leap Out As Well; The Obvious Rouser Is The Brazilian Go-Go Treatment Of The Beatles' "Day Tripper," But The Sultry Treatment Of Henry Mancini's "Slow Hot Wind" And The Rapid-Fire "Tim Dom Dom" Also Deserve Mention.” Richard S. Ginell, AMG.... more details

Mendes, Sergio - Crystal Illusions Crystal Illusions
Jazz New - LP SP 4197 A&M
Sealed 1969 Original. “The Sound And Band That Served Sergio Mendes Well On Fool On The Hill Remain Intact On Crystal Illusions, With Few Modifications. Dave Grusin Is Right There With A Lush, Haunting Orchestral Chart When Needed; Lani Hall Is Thrust Further Into The Vocal Spotlight, As Cool And Alluring As Ever In Portuguese Or English. Mendes Remained On The Lookout For Fresh Brazilian Tunes, And He Came Up With A Coup, One Of The Earliest Covers Of A Milton Nascimento Tune To Reach North America, "Vera Cruz" (With Hall's English Lyrics, It Became "Empty Faces"), As Well As Dori Caymmi's "Dois Dias." The Two Singles, The Perky "Pretty World" And Sax-Streaked Cover Of Otis Redding's "The Dock Of The Bay," Are Nice Slices Of Mendes Pop, Though They Were Not Significant Hits. And Yes, Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 Did Take A Large Risk On The Title Track, A Lengthy, Kaleidoscopic Treatment Of An Edu Lobo Tune That, Inspired Perhaps By "Macarthur Park," Shattered Radio's Time Barrier At Seven Minutes And 50 Seconds. Yet While Grusin Goes Into A Psychedelic Freakout, We Get A Rare Chance To Hear Mendes Stretch Out A Bit On Electric Piano. Weird And Overblown, But Wonderful.” Richard Ginell, AMG.... more details

Mendes, Sergio - Equinox Equinox
Jazz Used - LP SMF66-9921 A&M Mayfair
Beautiful Early UK Pressing Housed In A Laminated Jacket And Featuring Completely Different Artwork Than The U.S. Pressing. “Equinox Continues The Scrumptiously Winning Sound That Sergio Mendes Cooked Up In The Mid-'60s, This Time A Bit More Fleshed Out With John Pisano's Guitar, A Slightly Thicker Texture, And Even An Imitation Sitar (This Was, After All, 1967). Again, The Mix Of American Pop Tunes Old And New And Brazilian Standards And Sleepers Is Impeccable (Although It Didn't Yield Any Substantial Hits), And The Treatments Are Smooth, Swinging, And Very Much To The Point. While Mendes Reaps A Predictable Harvest From Antonio Carlos Jobim -- He Was One Of The First To Discover And Record "Triste" And "Wave" -- He Also Likes To Explore The Work Of Other Outstanding Brazilian Writers Like Jorge Ben, Joao Gilberto, And Especially Edu Lobo (Whose "For Me," With Its Bright Flashes Of Combo Organ, Is One Of The Album's Highlights). Lani Hall's Star Was Just Rising At This Time, And It Is Her Cool, Clear Voice That Haunts The Memory Most Often. Like Its Predecessor, Equinox Is Exceedingly Brief In Duration, Yet Not A Motion Is Wasted.” Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide.... more details

Mendes, Sergio - Home Cooking Home Cooking
Jazz New - LP 7E 1055 Elektra
Sealed 1976 Gatefold Original. Cut Corner. “In 1975, Sergio Mendes Unveiled A New Group That Was Billed As Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77, Who Got Off To A Pleasant Start With Homecooking. In Contrast To The Bossa Nova, Samba, And Brazilian Pop-Jazz That Put Mendes On The Map In The '60s, Brasil '77 Had More Of A Soul/Funk/Quiet Storm Outlook. Quite Clearly, Homecooking Was Aimed At The '70s Soul Market -- The Album Is Closer To Stevie Wonder, The Emotions, Or Earth, Wind & Fire Than Antonio Carlos Jobim Or Astrud Gilberto. Most Of The Tunes Aren't Overly Brazilian-Sounding, And The Vast Majority Of The Lyrics Are In English Rather Than Portuguese. Even The Songs That Were Written By Well-Known Brazilian Composers (Including João Donato's "Emorio" And Gilberto Gil's "Hey People, Hey") Are Mostly Or Entirely In English. So When You Add All Of Those Things Up, It Makes No Sense To Judge Homecooking By Bossa Nova Or Samba Standards Because That Isn't The Type Of Approach That Mendes Is Going For. Soul, Funk, And Quiet Storm Standards -- Not Hardcore Brazilian Standards -- Must Be Applied.” Alex Henderson, AMG.... more details
