Perry, Lee Scratch - Repentance Repentance
Reggae New - LP NCK 7045 Narnack
Sealed, Out Of Print 2008 Gatefold Vinyl. “Since His Legendary Black Ark Studio Burned To The Ground In 1979, Eccentric Reggae Godfather Lee "Scratch" Perry Has Made The Transition From Dub Producer To Oddball Dancehall Vocalist, Delivering His Wild Lyrics In A Futuristic Rasta Style While Leaving The Bulk Of The Work To Other Musicians And Knob Twiddlers. This Has Driven Away His Purist Fans, Who Find His Later Work "Rubbish," And While They Have A Point When It Comes To Perry's Iffy Relationship With Quality Control, The Man Can Be A Fascinating Left-Field Personality And Wonderfully Twisted Guru Given The Right Surroundings. Any Collaboration With Adrian Sherwood Or Mad Professor's Name On It Is Just That. Repentance Adds A Surprising Name To That List, Andrew W.K., The "Party Hard" Man Who Here Creates A Laptop Dancehall Landscape Filled With Head-Bobbing Grooves, Slight Touches Of Dub, And Just The Right Amount Of Strangeness. Sounding Much More Animated And Inspired Than He Did On 2007's The End Of An American Dream, Perry Rides The Shift From Slow Jamaican Shuffle To Crunchy Guitar Grumble On The Opening "Shine" And Acts Like The Dreadlocked Equivalent Of Usher On The Great "Pum-Pum," L.S.P. And A.W.K.'S Version Of The Hip-Hop Strip Club Track. "Crazy Pimp" Might Even Be More Pimp Than Crazy, While The Busy Space Disco Of "Santa Claus" Finds The One They Call The Upsetter Belting Out A Hearty "Hee-Haw!!" Repentance Likes To Wander And Sprawl — It Can Get Sleazy, And Can Sometimes Fade Into The Background — But It's A Great Example Of How The Snobs Are Really Missing Out On Something Fun, Weird, And Uplifting In The Most Bohemian Way Possible.” – David Jeffries, All Music Guide... more details

Perry, Lee Scratch - Scratch On The Wire Scratch On The Wire
Reggae Used - LP ILPS 9583 Island
Beautiful 1979 Original. “Island Reputedly Compiled This Ten-Song Set Of Black Ark Productions In A Tit-For Tat Response To Lee "Scratch" Perry's Licensing Out Tracks From The Heptones' Party Time Album To Another Label (Black Starliner). Or So The Upsetter Would Later Claim. In Any Event, Sparse As It Looks Today; In 1979, Scratch On The Wire Was Quite An Exciting Collection. The Material Dated From 1976 Through 1978, And It Was The Last Number, "War In A Babylon," The Title Track To Max Romeo's Classic 1976 Album, That Was Inevitably Most British Fans' Point Of Entry. Most Everything Else On This Set Was Of Equally High Caliber, "No Peace" Was One Of The Meditations' Best, "In This Time" Is A Masterpiece Of Vocal Performance And Riddim, And The Coursing "John Public" Is Just As Good. Jah Lion's "Police And Soldier" Was Just Extraordinary, A Powerful Cultural Toast Over A Sublime Version Of Junior Murvin's "Police & Thieves." But Even That Can't Beat The Mesmerizing "Vibrate On," One Of Augustus Pablo's Best Performances For Perry. Perry Himself Features On Three Of The Cuts, Two -- "Soul Fire" And "Big Neck Police" -- Appeared On His Roast Fish Collie Weed & Corn Bread Album, The Third Was Drawn From His Return Of The Super Ape Set. Both Records Were Released In 1978, Thus Bringing This Compilation Right Up To Date.“ - Jo-Ann Greene, AMG... more details

Perry, Lee Scratch - Battle Of Armagideon (Millionaire Liquidator) Battle Of Armagideon (Millionaire Liquidator)
Reggae Used - LP TRLS 227 Trojan
1986 Original. “"Open Your Eyes And See/Open Your Ears And Listen," Perry Advises On This Excellent Record, And You Would Be Foolish To Ignore This Advice. Battle, In Many Ways, Gets To The Heart Of Perry's Technique As A Mixer And Producer. The Bass Throbs So Much On This Record That You Would Swear It's Leaking Out Of The Grooves, And Perry's Added Sound Filigrees (Echo, Sheets Of Noise, Explosive Volume) Don't Disrupt The Music As Much As Add To The Very Psychedelic Ambience. The Disc's Most Celebrated Track Is "I'm A Madman," Wherein Perry Acknowledges His Lunatic Persona. Also Wonderful Is The Opening Track, "Introducing Myself," Which Functions As A Surreal, Partly Fictional Autobiography. Close To Spectacular, This Is A Great Single Slice Of Perry Mania.” – John Dougan, AMG... more details
