R. Murray Schafer / Maureen Forrester - Adieu Robert Schumann / Hymn To Night Adieu Robert Schumann / Hymn To Night
Opera New - LP SM 364 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
Sealed 1979 Stereo Original. Mario Bernardi Conducting The National Arts Centre Orchestra With Contralto, Maureen Forrester On Side One. Dwight Bennett Conducting The CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra With Soprano, Riki Turofsky On Side Two. “This Work For Soprano, Piano, And Orchestra Is A Uniquely Structured Melodrama, Wherein The Pianist Accompanies The Soprano As The Orchestra Accompanies Both Performers. The Melodrama Is Set At Endenich Asylum, Where Composer Robert Schumann Spent His Last Few Years, Incapacitated By Madness, Until His Death In 1856. The Soprano Performs The Part Of Clara Schumann, The Composer's Wife, Who Watches Her Husband's Passing While Recounting The Events Of The Last Days. The Words Are Actually Hers; Schafer Used Her Letters For The Text. The Only Exception Is The Fragment Of A Poem By Heinrich Heine, "Dein Angesicht" (Your Face), As It Was Used As A Text For Robert Schumann's Song, Op. 127, No. 2. The Music Of That Song Is Used As Well, As The First Stanza And A Half Of That Piece Begins And Ends Schafer's Score, Which Then Careens Off Into Depictions Of This Deathly Affair Of Watching Robert's Passing, Along With Bits Of Fanciful Soundscapes Suggesting What A Lunatic's Brain Might Contain, The 20-Minute Score Is An Especially Emotional Affair, Deeply Imbedded In History. Brahms And Joachim, Who Were Close Friends Of The Schumanns, Are Mentioned In Passing, And The Way Schafer Has Reconstructed This Tragic End Of A Husband Is Recounted By His Wife, Is Tender And Grave. The Late Twentieth Century Music That Constitutes The Bulk Of The Score Has Hints Of Late-Romantic And Expressionist Germanic Overtones, Building A Complete Feeling Of Schumann's Legacy And The Influence He Had On Subsequent Composers. It Is Alluring, Hard Felt Material, And Another Example Of Schafer's Dauntingly Elastic Imagination.” John Keillor, AMG.... more details
