Stewart, John - Cannons In The Rain Cannons In The Rain
Pop New - LP LSP 4827 RCA
Sealed 1973 Gatefold Original. Embossed Promo Stamp On Cover. “Cannons Was Released Just About The Time The Outlaw Movement Was Cracking It In Austin With Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Waylon Jennings, Billy Joe Shaver, Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Kris Kristofferson, And The Rest. Stewart's Music Could Not Have Sounded More Out Of Place With The Texans. This Was California Country Music That Had Been Drenched In Stewart's Folk Influences. He Enlisted Some Of Old Friends Such As Banjo Boss Bobby Thompson, Drummer Russ Kunkel, Harmonicat Charlie Mccoy, Pianist Hargus "Pig" Robbins, And Backing Vocalist Buffy Ford. Some Of The Newer Faces Are What Make The Difference, However, And These Include Pete Drake On Pedal Steel And Dobro, The Nashville Edition On Backing Vocals, And Guitarists Waddy Wachtel And Kelso Herston. Stewart's In Fine Voice And Lyrical Form. The Loopy Melody Of "Easy Money" That Straddles The Line Between Soft Rock And Honky Tonk Is An Example As Is The Forlorn Folky Country Of "Chilly Winds." "Road Away" Is Southern California Country At Its Finest. The Title Cut With Its Tender Chorus And Gentle Melody Line Is Gorgeous. This Is Like Jimmy Webb Without The Acid. "Lady And The Outlaw" Is A Nod To What Was Happening In Austin Despite Its High-On-Weed Spoken Word Intro. But Here It Is, Stewart Rolling Out A Tune That Could Have Been Written By Jerry Jeff And Sung By Either Steve Young Or Waylon. It's A Hell Of A Way To Close An Album And Makes The Listener Long For An Entire Record Of Tunes Like This -- Which Came With Wingless Angels The Very Next Year.” Thom Jurek, AMG.... more details

Stewart, John - Phoenix Concerts Live Phoenix Concerts Live
Pop New - LP CPL2-0265 RCA
Sealed 1974 2LP Heavy-Duty Gatefold Original. “John Stewart' Phoenix Concerts Is Regarded As One Of The Classic Live Records Of The Folk Singer/Songwriter Genre, And It's Easy To See Why. It's Obvious That Stewart Has An Adoring Audience At The Peak Of His Popularity In 1974. Taken From A Few Concert Sessions, The Bands Range From The Artist In A Trio Setting To Being In A Full On Septet With Pedal Steel Guitar And Backing Vocalists. Besides Stewart Himself, The Only Notable Performer On The Sets Is Legendary Drummer Jim Gordon. Many Of Stewart's Classics Are Here, Including A Very Inspired "Wheatfield Lady" And "Kansas Rain." The Music Hearkens Back To A Much More Innocent Time That Many At This Concert No Doubt Longed For -- Just As The Artist Himself Might Have After 1968, When His Dreams Were Shattered With The Death Of Robert Kennedy (Stewart Toured With Kennedy On The Campaign Trail). Other Gems Here Are "California Bloodlines," "Mother Country," "The Last Campaign Trilogy," Which Is So Moving It's Almost Unbearable. With "Roll Away The Stone," "July, You're A Woman," And "Cody," Stewart Hits His Stride And Goes Over The Top, And The Gigs Shift Into A Whole Different Gear. His Stories Are Endearing And Pre-Date What Garrison Keillor Did By A Decade. The Set Officially Closes With A Stunning Rendition Of "Never Goin' Back (To Nashville Anymore)," That Makes You Forget The Studio Version And Wonder Why It Wasn't Covered By Townes Van Zandt Or Mickey Newbury.” Thom Jurek, AMG.... more details

Stewart, John - Bombs Away Dream Babies Bombs Away Dream Babies
Folk New - LP RS-1-3051 RSO
Sealed 1979 Original With Custom Hype Sticker On The Shrink Wrap. Small Cut Corner. Slight Cover Crease/Corner Bump. “After Departing The Kingston Trio And Struggling For More Than A Decade To Find Success With His Critically Acclaimed Folk Albums, John Stewart Finally Reached His Commercial Peak With 1979's Bombs Away Dream Babies. It Hit The Top Ten And Temporarily Turned Him Into A "New" Pop Star At Age 40. Stewart's Folk Leanings Are Evident On This Album, But It's Mostly A Straightforward Pop/Rock Affair. The Guest Performances By Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham On Guitar And Stevie Nicks On Background Vocals Certainly Helped, Especially Since They Were Still Riding High On The Success Of Rumours. "Gold" Was A Thinly Veiled Criticism Of The Music Business Set To A Smooth Shuffle Beat. Ironically, It Became A Top Five Hit. The Bittersweet "Lost Her In The Sun" And The Darkly Dramatic "Midnight Wind" Also Hit The Top 40.” – Breat Adams, AMG... more details

Stewart, John - Last Campaign Last Campaign
Folk Used - LP HC 00300 Homecoming
1985 Original Still In Shrink Wrap. Includes Custom Inner Sleeve. “The Last Campaign, Issued In 1985 On John Stewart's Homecmoing Records Label, Is An Album Of Songs Written During And About The Presidential Campaign Of Robert Kennedy That Ended In His Assassination. Stewart And Buffy Ford Traveled With Kennedy, Playing On Flatbed Trucks From The Backs Of Trains, On Stages At Rallies, Anywhere They Could. Some Of The Songs, Like "Pirates Of Stone Country Road," Have Appeared Before, But These Are Re-Recordings Of All Of Them, Thematically Linked To The Promise And Devastation That Went Along With Kennedy's Death. California Friends Like Linda Ronstadt, Lindsey Buckingham, Chuck Mcdermott, And Fred Koch Were On Board As Well As A Few Others. By And Large This Is A Simple But Beautiful Recording That Stewart Produced By Himself, Wrapped Deeply In Reverie And The Romanticism Of A Time That Perhaps Never Existed. But To The Listener, No Matter What Questions Exist Beforehand -- Or After The Albums Closes With A Reprise Of The Title Song, And Dreams Are Shattered, Left In The Dust, Or Embittered -- This Is All Heartfelt And Real.” – Thom Jurek, AMG... more details

Stewart, John - California Bloodlines California Bloodlines
Pop Used - LP ST 203 Capitol
Beautiful 1969 Black Rainbow Label Original. Vinyl Appears Glossy, Unplayed. “California Bloodlines Is Regarded By Many To Be Singer/Songwriter John Stewart's Finest Work. That's Debatable, But It Is A Hell Of An Album. Stewart, Who Had Finally Left Behind The Kingston Trio To Pursue A Solo Career, Solidified It Here. Well Known As The Guy Who Wrote "Daydream Believer" For The Monkees, Stewart Proved To Be A Credible, Sometimes Even Enigmatic Performer In His Own Right. Nick Venet Produced California Bloodlines. He Took Stewart To Nash Vegas And Enlisted A Host Of Studio Cats Who Existed Largely Outside Of Chet Atkins' Countrypolitan Mafia: Drummer Kenneth A. Buttrey, Bassist Norbert Putnam, Harmonicat Charlie Mccoy, Lloyd Green On Pedal Steel, And Others, Including The Most Sought-After Upright Pianist In Country Music History: Hargus "Pig" Robbins. Incidentally, Many Of These Same Musicians Played On Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline Session. Musically, California Bloodlines Is A Study In Contradictions. Texturally Thin Like Stewart's Voice, The Songs Are Romantic Visions Of People And Places That Come Out Of A Present Which Is Already In The Past And A Past Inhabited By Ghosts. But This Is Also Where Stewart Excels Lyrically.” – Thom Jurek. AMG... more details

Stewart, John - California Bloodlines California Bloodlines
Pop New - LP SM 203 Capitol
Sealed 2nd Issue Of His Outstanding 1969 Recording. Issued In 1969, “California Bloodlines Is Regarded By Many To Be Singer/Songwriter John Stewart's Finest Work. That's Debatable, But It Is A Hell Of An Album. Stewart, Who Had Finally Left Behind The Kingston Trio To Pursue A Solo Career, Solidified It Here. Texturally Thin Like Stewart's Voice, The Songs Are Romantic Visions Of People And Places That Come Out Of A Present Which Is Already In The Past And A Past Inhabited By Ghosts. But This Is Also Where Stewart Excels Lyrically. His Portraits Of Spirits Are Made Nearly Flesh In His Songs, Which Are Ambitious Lyrically If Not Musically, Such As The Title Track, "The Pirates Of Stone County Road," "Razor-Back Woman," "Some Lonesome Picker," "July You're A Woman," And "You Can't Look Back," With Green's Pedal Steel Dancing Throughout The Melody And Filling In Each Line. But Perhaps The Most Beautiful Track On The Album Is The Elegiac "Missouri Birds," With Its Lilt And Slow-Stepped Observations About Space And Time. And While Generally Regarded As A Folk Artist, Stewart's Country Roots Are Displayed Here Are As Deep As Mickey Newbury's, Even If He Wasn't Born In Texas. This Is A Glorious Recording Which Kicks Off An Erratic Yet Never Dull Career With A Bang.” Thom Jurek, AMG.... more details
