Modern Cool
Audiophile - Used - PREM-741-1
1998 US 180gm audiophile pressing on Premonition Records from Music Direct. Small bottom seal split. "The dark, smoky voice of Patricia Barber is quite haunting. On Modern Cool, she mostly sings downbeat songs at slow tempos. All but three songs are her own originals, and they deal with such subject matter as a "homage to beauty" that seems to connect painting one's face with prostitution, loneliness, mindless conformity, the "postmodern blues" and other depressing topics. Even her treatments of "You and the Night and the Music" and "Light My Fire" make one think that she is utterly bored with life. Barber, whose piano playing is mostly very much in the background, comes across on this set as a pop/folk singer. Most of the jazz moments are provided by trumpeter Dave Douglas, who is on half of the selections and adds some much-needed excitement; guitarist John McLean, bassist Michael Arnopol, and drummer/percussionist Mark Walker complete the group. This set is definitely for specialized tastes." All Music Guide - Scott Yanow. more

Mythologies
Audiophile - New - MFSL 2-318
Factory sealed, 2010 half-speed mastered 2LP 180gm HQ audiophile pressing from Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab. Limited, numbered edition #002446. Mythologies is Patricia Barber at her most conceptual and structurally ambitious. Drawing inspiration from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the album unfolds as a suite of originals, each piece reflecting a mythological figure while remaining grounded in modern jazz language. Barber’s piano anchors the compositions with cool precision, while shifting meters and layered harmonies give the music a restless, intellectual energy. Her vocal delivery remains restrained and deliberate, allowing the narrative undercurrents to surface gradually rather than dramatically. The result is a work that feels both literary and contemporary—disciplined, atmospheric, and compositionally rich. Mythologies stands as one of Barber’s most architecturally complex recordings, rewarding attentive listening with depth and subtle emotional resonance. more

"Nightclub" is a studio album by jazz singer and pianist Patricia Barber, released in 2000. It marks her sixth album and showcases her deep appreciation and reinterpretation of classic jazz standards. The album's production highlights Barber's minimalist yet expressive vocal style, complemented by her piano performance. Throughout the record, Barber collaborates with a talented ensemble of musicians, including guitarist Charlie Hunter and drummer Adam Cruz, creating a rich, textured soundscape. The selection of tracks reflects a blend of moody, introspective tunes and lively, upbeat numbers, demonstrating Barber's versatility and emotional depth as a jazz artist. The album is noted for its intimate, almost live feel, akin to the atmosphere of a cozy, late-night jazz club. Barber's interpretations of well-known standards such as "Autumn Leaves," "Yesterdays," and "Bye Bye Blackbird" are both respectful and innovative, offering fresh perspectives on these timeless pieces. Her nuanced phrasing and subtle improvisations breathe new life into the familiar melodies, making "Nightclub" a favorite among jazz enthusiasts. The album's production quality and Barber's sophisticated approach to the genre have contributed to its critical acclaim, solidifying her reputation as a leading figure in contemporary jazz. more

1997 US limited 180gm audiophile pressing on Alto Analogue. NM- jacket. Mastered by Stan Ricker at AcousTech and pressed at RTI. First vinyl pressing, originally released in 1989. "Pianist/vocalist Patricia Barber's recording debut, Split, is a fairly straight-ahead affair featuring the idiosyncratic stylist on various standards and originals. Showcasing her unique approach to jazz, the album finds Barber mixing pointed and minimalist lines à la Chet Baker with a dramatic cabaret vocal style and complex harmonic post-bop passages -- a template that longtime fans will recognize. To these ends, Barber opens with a brisk Latin version of "Early Autumn," takes a dusky vocal turn on "Easy to Love," and shows her cerebral side on such originals as "Winter Illusion." Joining Barber here are bassist Michael Arnopol and drummer Mark Walker." All Music Guide - Matt Collar. more
