"Bob Geldof Had Revealed A Taste For The Seamy Side Of Things In His Lyrics For The Boomtown Rats' First Album. On Their Second Record, He Fantasized About Being Hitler In The Person Of The "Leader Of The Pack" ("I Never Loved Eva Braun"), Romanticized Tropical Suicide ("Living In An Island"), And Identified With A Certain Wealthy Recluse ("Me And Howard Hughes"). The Band Retained A Punk Energy On The Album's U.K. Hit Singles, "Like Clockwork," "She's So Modern," And "Rat Trap" (Another Of Geldof's Springsteen Homages), But Musical Identity Was Still A Song-By-Song Affair. [In The U.S., Columbia Replaced "Can't Stop" And "[Watch Out For] The Normal People" With "Mary Of The 4th Form" And "Joey's On The Street Again" From The First Album.] William Ruhlmann, AMD.

The Fine Art Of Surfacing
Used - Vinyl - JC 36248
1979 Original in shrink. The Fine Art of Surfacing is the third studio album by the Irish rock band The Boomtown Rats, led by charismatic frontman Bob Geldof. The record captures the band at the height of their creative powers, blending new wave and punk influences with sharp lyricism and infectious hooks. Its standout track, "I Don't Like Mondays," became a global hit, topping the UK Singles Chart for four weeks and resonating with its poignant commentary on real-life events. Other tracks like "Diamond Smiles" and "Someone’s Looking at You" showcase the band’s knack for storytelling and social observation, delivered with energetic musicianship and clever arrangements. Produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange, the album benefits from a polished yet dynamic sound that enhances the Rats’ distinct style. For vinyl enthusiasts, the original pressing is notable for its crisp analog warmth, which brings out the full texture of the band’s interplay and the emotional depth of Geldof’s vocals. The Fine Art of Surfacing stands as a testament to the Boomtown Rats’ impact on late-70s rock, offering both catchy anthems and incisive narratives, making it a rewarding addition to any collection of classic era vinyl record.
