Budos Band II
New - Vinyl - DAP 011
Sealed 2007 180gm. “This Brooklyn-Based Instrumental Collective Combines Slow-Burn Afro-Beat Rhythms With A '70s Soul-Jazz Aesthetic, The Latter Sound Well-Known By Those Already Familiar With The Daptone Label's Other Releases. The Retro, Almost Blaxploitation Soundtrack Groove Pushes The Predominantly Afro Style Into American Soul Territory. They Call It "Afro-Soul," Which Neatly Sums Up The Style But Doesn't Entirely Do It Justice; Only Hearing It Does. Horns And Horn Charts Dominate, Which, Because These Sessions Were Recorded Live In The Studio, Exude A Spark And Swing That Are Somewhat Ominous Yet Hypnotically Contagious.” – Hal Horowitz, AMG

Budos Band III
New - Vinyl - DAP 020
Sealed 2010 Original. “After Two Well-Received Full-Lengths And An EP, Staten Island's Budos Band Return With III In 2010. The Group's First Two Recordings Walked A Loose Tightrope Line Between The Modern Jazzed-Up Afro-Beat Sound Of Antibalas And The Soulful Good-Time Funk Groove Of Sugarman 3. It's Also True That While They Fit The Daptone Label's Groove-Centric Aesthetic, III Reveals A New Direction, Offering The View That They Are Also Something Other. This 11-Song Set, Recorded In 48 Hours, Offers A Darker, More Spacious Tinge. Elements Of Psychedelic, Middle Eastern, And Even Latin Sounds Have Entered Their Mix, Without Sacrificing Their Dance Party Cachet.” – Thom Jurek, AMG

Burnt Offering

Long In The Tooth
New - Vinyl - DAP-065
Sealed 2020, Standard Black Edition. Die Cut Front Cover With Obi Style Hype Strip. The Sixth Offering From The Doom-Rock/Afro-Soul Daptone Stalwarts. "Staten Island's Budos Band Celebrate Their 15th Anniversary With The Release Of Long In The Tooth, Their Sixth Long-player. While The Tongue-in-cheek Title Refers To The Band's Longevity, It Also References The Music On Offer Here. They Shifted Aesthetic Gears With 2014's Burnt Offering, Adding A Heady, Heavy Mix Of Riff-centric Rock And Psychedelia To Their Swaggering Meld Of R&b, Jump Blues, And Afro-funk, And Placed The Guitars, Organ, And Drums Right Up Front. This Set References The Band's Earliest Records With Horns As Front-line Instruments Framed By Inventive Beats And Infectious Riffs. This Isn't An Exercise In Nostalgia, However; The Budos' Restlessness Remains Their M.o. Over These 11 Relatively Brief Tracks. That's No Mean Feat. Long In The Tooth Is Easily The Most Complex Album In The Budos Band's Catalog. It Succeeds Because They Refuse To Graft On Too Many Extras Into Their Sonic And Stylistic Approach. The Music Here Retains The Band's Core Strength -- They Incessantly Rely On Deep, Hard-swinging, Intensely Delivered Grooves, No Matter The Material." All Music Guide - Thom Jurek

The Budos Band II
New - Vinyl - DAP-011
Sealed, Latest Pressing Of The 2007 Original. "This Brooklyn-based Instrumental Collective Combines Slow-burn Afro-beat Rhythms With A '70s Soul-Jazz Aesthetic, The Latter Sound Well-Known By Those Already Familiar With The Daptone Label's Other Releases. Horns And Horn Charts Dominate, Which, Because These Sessions Were Recorded Live In The Studio, Exude A Spark And Swing That Are Somewhat Ominous Yet Hypnotically Contagious. The Band Cites Both The Sugarman 3 And Antibalas As Influences, And The Resulting Mélange Is The Flash Point Between Those Two Acts. Unlike Much Afro-Beat, The Budos Band's Songs Are Compact, With Only Two Extended Past Four Minutes. Titles Such As "King Cobra," "Scorpion," And "Ride Or Die" Emphasize The Underlying Danger Inherent In The Vibe. Most Impressive, Though, Is The Collaborative Aspect At Work Here. None Of The Solos Are Extended And The Concise Track Times Keep The Music Sharp And Taut, Creating A Mood And Getting Out. There's A Strong R&B Undercurrent, Especially In The Bass On "His Girl," An Innovative Rewrite Of The Temptations' "My Girl." "Origin Of Man" Practically Begs To Be The Soundtrack To A Film Noir, And Much Of This Would Work As Backing Music To A Typical '70s Grindhouse Flick, Which Is A High Compliment. Its Swirling Sound Crosses Genres And Eras With Effortless Precision, Joining World-RootsFfunk With The Thumping Urban Groove Of The Western World." AMG Review By Hal Horowitz.

The Budos Band III
New - Vinyl - DAP-020
Sealed Repress. Originally Released In 2010. "After Two Well-received Full-lengths And An Ep, Staten Island's Budos Band Return With Iii In 2010. Elements Of Psychedelic, Middle Eastern, And Even Latin Sounds Have Entered Their Mix, Without Sacrificing Their Dance Party Cachet. The Opening "Rite Of The Ancients," "Black Venom," "Unbroken, Unshaven," And "Mark Of The Unnamed" All Feel Like They Could Have Been Instrumental Interludes In A '70s Blaxploitation Flick, But Are Fully Developed Harmonic Ideas Instead Of Simple Vamps. The Horn Chart On The Latter Track Is A Monster, With Popping Three-way Dialogue Between Baritone Saxophonist Jared Tankel, Farfisa Organist Mike Deller, And All Four Percussionists. Also Noteworthy Is Guitarist Thomas Brenneck's Reverbed Surf Sound That Introduces The Darkly Compelling "Nature's Wrath." The Horns -- Tankel And Two Trumpets -- Punch Up A Minor-Key Vibe That Unwinds Around A Tense Film Noir Chart And A Mariachi Melody. Then It Gets Decorated By Daisy Sugarman's Ghostly Flute, As The Percussionists Play Around All Dimensions Of Kit Man Brian Profilio's Breaks; It Creates A More Spaced-Out Set Of Atmospherics Without Losing The Groove -- Deller's Organ Enters In The Final Moments As Icing On The Cake. Other Tunes With A More Sinister, Moodier Vibe Include "Golden Dunes" And "Budos Dirge," But They Too Give Off Plenty Of Heat And Crackling Energy. There's A Malian Tinge In The Budos' Afro-Soul On "Raja Haje," Led By Brenneck's Guitar. The Closer, "Reppirt Yad," Is The Beatles' "Day Tripper" Given Inside-Out, Upside-Down Funky Treatment In A Slower Tempo With Out Atmospherics. "River Serpentine" And "Crimson Skies" Are Breezier In Comparison To The Rest And More Traditionally Budos, With Plenty Of Butt-Shaking Whomp. This Third Chapter In The Budos Band's Legacy Is A Giant Step Forward. It Is A Gambit Where Everything Just Gets Deeper And Wider; The Payoff Is Mighty." AMG Review By Thom Jurek.

V
New - Vinyl - DAP-057
Sealed 2019 Original. Unlimited Black Vinyl Version. "In 2015, Staten Island's Budos Band Surprised Fans With Burnt Offering; Their First Non-numbered Title, It Delivered A Shift In Musical Direction. In Addition To Their Trademarked Fusion Of Mulatu Astatke-Inspired Ethio-Jazz, Afrofunk, And Hard-Swinging R&B, They Indulged A Collective Love For Darker, '70s-Era Hard Rock And Psychedelia. With V They Have Fully Integrated The Latter Aesthetic With The Former. The Hard Rock Dimension Of Their Musical Persona Now Exists In An Unholy Balance With The Groove Elements Of Their First Three Recordings. The Set Also Reflects A New Budos Reality: Guitarist Thomas Brenneck And Baritone Saxophonist Jared Tankel Relocated To California, And Other Members Became Parents. Budos Became A Bi-coastal Outfit Whose Thursday Night Rehearsals And Writing Sessions Were Jettisoned In Favor Of Periodic Get-togethers When Members Could Travel East. They Wrote And Tracked V At The Same Time In Their New Diamond Mine Recording Studio, All Within 72 Hours. Brenneck Took The Tapes Back With Him To L.a. Where He And Daptone's Gabriel Roth Mixed The 34-minute Set.
This Fifth Outing Showcases A More Aggressive And Inventive Budos Band Than The One Heard On Burnt Offering. Opener And Single "Old Engine Oil" Commences With A "Whole Lotta Love"-inspired Guitar Vamp Before Cracking Snares And Kick Drums Enter Alongside Horns. The Sound Is Ragged And Immediate, Charged With Energy, Fury, And Soul. The Horn Lines Marry Muscle Shoals-Styled Charts To Driving Hard Rock Via Electric Guitars, Wah-Wah, Breakbeat Drumming, And A Wrangling Bassline. "The Enchanter"'s Spooky Farfisa Organ And Fuzzed-Out Guitar Vamp Introduce Horns That Deliver A Strolling, Punched-up Weave Of Ethio-Jazz And Fingerpopping R&B With Reverb On Stun. "Ghost Talk" Is Introduced Via A Nasty, Distorted Bassline Flanked By Guitars In One Channel And Cowbell And Snare In The Other. When The Horns Enter, They Contribute Afrobeat's Meaty Fill. A Wonky Organ Solo Paired With The Bassline Swaggers Amid Excessive Reverb And Wah-Wah Effects. "Arcane Rambler" Is A Collision Of Vintage Psychedelic Funk And Jazzy Adventure. The Intersection Of Horns And Breakbeats And Loopy Analog Effects Smashes Driving Metallic Rock Straight Into Afrobeat With A Sense Of Urgent Cosmic Psychosis. "Maelstrom" -- An Illustration Of Budos' Ability To Marry Ferocious Rock Dynamics And Tripped-Out Psych With Cinematic Drama -- Spikes And Flows. "Veil Of Shadows," With Its Droning Organ, Staccato Guitars, And Swinging Snare Evoke Acid Surf And Spanish-flavored Rock As The Horns Frame Andrew Greene's Solo Trumpet, Calling Chaos To The Fore From Reverbed Margins. Closer "Valley Of The Damned" Is Initially Fueled By A Distorted, Fuzz-Damaged Bass In Pure Psych Freakout Before Guitars, Keys, Drums, And Horns Swirl Together All The Band's Musical Styles In An Orgiastic Sound Collision. V Is A Raucous, Incendiary Portrait Of The Band's Maturity; It's Creative And Expertly Crafted, An Exploratory Step Further Into An Unknown That Refuses To Compromise Or Forsake Its Established Sonic Footprint Or Identity."
