Astley, Virginia - From Gardens Where We Feel Secure
1983 UK Original With Custom Inner Sleeve. Appears Unplayed. “Virginia Astley's Solo Debut (She Had Previously Been A Member Of The Short-Lived Ravishing Beauties With Kate St. John And Nicky Holland, And Played Piano On Her Brother-In-Law Pete Townshend's Single "Slit Skirts") Is A Magical Piece Of Instrumental Pop. It's Too Melodic To Be Brian Eno-Style Ambient Music, Too Involving To Be New Age Mush, Too Simple And Casual To Fit In Comfortably With The Post-Minimalist School Of Michael Nyman, Andrew Poppy, Or Wim Mertens, And Too Restrained To Truly Be Pop Music. Almost Entirely Instrumental, Save For A Few Wordless Vocals On "A Summer Long Since Past," And Featuring Little Instrumentation Besides Astley's Piano And Some Subtle Woodwinds, The Album Is A Lovely 35-Minute Meditation Built Around Field Recordings Astley Made Of The Ambient Sounds Of The Rural English Countryside. This Description Makes The Album Sound Much More Twee And Insubstantial Than It Actually Is; However, Astley Is No Mere Ambient Noodler. These Nine Songs Are Melodically Rich And Varied; Mood Pieces In The Truest Sense Of The Term. Specifically Designed To Mirror The Moods Of An Indolent Summer Day (The Sides Of The Original LP Were Even Marked "Morning" And "Afternoon"), From Gardens Where We Feel Secure Is A Dreamy, Involving, And Occasionally Even Fascinating Listen.” Stewart Mason, AMG....more

Zevon, Warren - Warren Zevon
Sealed 2009 180gm HQ Reissue With Glossy Insert. “Warren Zevon Was A Ten-Year Music Industry Veteran Who Had Written Songs For The Turtles, Backed Up Phil Everly, Done Years Of Session Work, And Been Befriended By Jackson Browne By The Time He Cut His Self-Titled Album In 1976 (Which Wasn't His Debut, Though The Less Said About 1969's Misbegotten Wanted Dead Or Alive The Better). Even Though Warren Zevon Was On Good Terms With L.A.'S Mellow Mafia, He Sure Didn't Think (Or Write) Like Any Of His Pals In The Eagles Or Fleetwood Mac; Zevon's Music Was Full Of Blood, Bile, And Mean-Spirited Irony, And The Glossy Surfaces Of Jackson Browne's Production Failed To Disguise The Bitter Heart Of The Songs On Warren Zevon. The Album Opened With A Jaunty Celebration Of A Pair Of Old West Thieves And Gunfighters ("Frank And Jesse James"), And Went On To Tell Remarkable, Slightly Unnerving Tales Of Ambitious Pimps ("The French Inhaler"), Lonesome Junkies ("Carmelita"), Wired, Hard-Living Lunatics ("I'll Sleep When I'm Dead"), And Truly Dastardly Womanizers ("Poor Poor Pitiful Me"), And Even Zevon's Celebrations Of Life In Los Angeles, Long A Staple Of The Soft Rock Genre, Had Both A Menace And An Epic Sweep His Contemporaries Could Never Match ("Join Me In L.A." And "Desperados Under The Eaves"). But For All Their Darkness, Zevon's Songs Also Possessed A Steely Intelligence, A Winning Wit, And An Unusually Sophisticated Melodic Sense, And He Certainly Made The Most Of The High-Priced Help Who Backed Him On The Album. Warren Zevon May Not Have Been The Songwriter's Debut, But It Was The Album That Confirmed He Was A Major Talent, And It Remains A Black-Hearted Pop Delight.” Mark Deming, AMG....more

Galas, Diamanda - Saint Of The Pit
1986 UK Original With Custom Inner Sleeve. Appears Glossy, Unplayed. “Saint Of The Pit Was One Of The First Galas Recordings In Which The Pieces Fall Relatively Easy Into The "Standard" Song Format. In Fact, Several Of These Songs Would Become Part Of Her Ongoing Repertoire And Be Including In Major Pieces Like Her Plague Mass. Relatively Traditional Melodies Are Employed (Including Her Borrowing Of The Berlioz Theme That's Been Used In Every Other Horror Movie Ever Made!) As Well As Regular Rhythms (By F.M. Einheit), Making This An Accessible Entry To Her Oeuvre For A Listener Grounded In Rock. If It Lacks Some Of The Insane Abandon Of Her Earlier Work, The Concision Of The Songs And Her Resolutely Strong And Passionate Voice Pretty Much Make Up The Difference. The Texts Are Oblique Thematic Allusions To Her Longstanding Battle Against AIDS And The Prejudices It Engendered And Some Of Them, Notably Tristan Corbiere's "Cris d'Aveugle" ("Blind Man's Cry") Are Extremely Effective. A Very Strong Recording By A Remarkable Artist.” Brian Olewnick, AMG....more

James Gang - Yer' Album
Sealed 1969 2nd Issue Gatefold Mastered At Sterling Sound (Released For A Short While On Bluesway BLS 6034 The Same Year). Small Cut Out Hole. “The James Gang's Debut LP, Yer' Album, Was Very Much A First Record And Very Much A Record Of Its Time. The Heavy Rock Scene Of The Period Was Given To Extensive Jamming, And Four Tracks Ran More Than Six Minutes Each. The Group Had Written Some Material, But They Were Still Something Of A Cover Band, And The Disc Included Their Extended Workouts On Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird" And The Yardbirds' "Lost Woman," The Latter A Nine-Minute Version Complete With Lengthy Guitar, Bass, And Drum Solos. But In Addition To The Blues Rock There Were Also Touches Of Pop And Progressive Rock, Mostly From Walsh Who Displayed A Nascent Sense Of Melody, Not To Mention Some Of The Taste For Being A Cutup That He Would Display In His Solo Career. Walsh's "Take A Look Around" Must Have Made An Impression On Pete Townshend During The Period Before The Album's Release When The James Gang Was Opening For The Who Since Townshend Borrowed It For The Music He Was Writing For The Abortive Lifehouse Follow-Up To Tommy. If "Wrapcity (I.E., Rhapsody) In English," A Minute-Long Piano And Strings Interlude, Seems Incongruous In Retrospect, Recall That This Was An Eclectic Era. But The Otherwise Promising "Fred," Which Followed, Broke Down Into A Pedestrian Jazz Routine, Suggesting That The Band Was Trying To Cram Too Many Influences Onto One Record And Sometimes Into One Song. Nevertheless, They Were Talented Improvisers, As The Open-Ended Album Closer, Jerry Ragavoy And Mort Shuman's "Stop," Made Clear. After Ten Minutes, Szymczyk Faded The Track Out, But Walsh Was Still Going Strong. Yer' Album Contained Much To Suggest That The James Gang, In Particular Its Guitarist, Had A Great Future, Even If It Was More An Album Of Performances Than Compositions.” – William Ruhlman, All Music Guide....more
