Musa • Ancestral Streams
Audiophile - Used - SES-19743-25LP
New, unplayed 2025 remastered reissue of this legendary Strata East title, still in outer baggy shrink with custom hype sticker. Part of the Mack Avenue Music Group x Strata-East series; Launched in 2025 and will be released over time on AAA vinyl cut by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, pressed on 180g RTI vinyl and deluxe laminated gatefold packaged— paper on cardboard— by Dorado. Liner notes by Nate Chinen. "Jazz fans revere the legacy of pianist, composer, educator, and Strata-East co-founder Stanley Cowell. That said, he remains underrecognized for his inestimably large contribution to the music and its musicians. Musa Ancestral Streams is a 1973 solo piano studio album released by his Strata-East label (collectively founded and owned with trumpeter Charles Tolliver) that abundantly showcases his skills as a composer, improviser, interpreter, and soloist. Though it followed Keith Jarrett's Facing You on ECM, a spotlight-stealing 1972 solo piano outing, Musa towers above it in diversity, scope, creativity and technique; it is also superior to ECM's other celebrated 1973 solo piano album: Paul Bley's Open, To Love. The album's title references Cowell's Muslim name (Musa Kalamula). It is a digest of Cowell's restless compositional book. Each of its nine original tracks were composed between 1958 and 1972. Some tunes had been recorded before, by, and with others. He used three pianos on the date: acoustic, electric, and kalimba, bridging history from the African diaspora to early jazz, blues, bop, and modal music in 20th century America and Europe.
Opener "Abscretions" weds funky gospel to NOLA-style piano blues -- rhythmically akin to Professor Longhair and Allen Toussaint. Next up is "Equipoise," a spectral ballad originally recorded on Max Roach's Members, Don't Git Weary in 1968 (co-starring the pianist and Tolliver). Its opening and through-guiding chordal vamp were stolen from a famous '80s pop song. Its dynamic juxtaposes soft, elegant, and strident chords in a sumptuous melody. "Maimoun," one of two tunes originally recorded for 1972's Illusion Suite (on ECM, no less), is a stride piano groover with rolling, left-hand ostinatos under a bluesy rag progression that travels into pop and classical motifs. It's followed by "Travelin' Man" (the original appeared on 1970's classic Blues for the Viet Kong), on which Cowell masterfully and imaginatively duets with himself on electric piano and kalimba. The groove is so catchy, Pharcyde sampled it for "On the DL." There are two versions of "Departure" included. In the first, Cowell's mentor and family friend Art Tatum's knotty stride innovations wed modern jazz to ragtime and blues to an encounter with Cecil Taylor's physical force and harmonic dissonance. (In listening, one can hear why pianist Jason Moran calls this one of his five favorite solo jazz piano albums.) The second version, shorter than its predecessor, commences with sprightly high-register arpeggios juxtaposing bop, blues, and ragtime, before closing with the riveting Ellingtonesque ballad "Sweet Song." Despite being undernoticed for five decades, Musa Ancestral Streams remains vital and revelatory in both Cowell's catalog and the annals of '70s jazz. Mack Avenue's 2025 remastered multi-format version contains four bonus cuts: "Orientale," "Dave's Chant," "Akua," and a shorter but no less grooving alternate take of "Travelin' Man"."
