El Michels Affair

Vinyl Records and Rare LPs:

Adult Themes
New - LP - BC090-LP
Sealed 2020 Standard Black Vinyl Original. Their Fourth Outing, Second Official On Big Crown. "A Couple Months After "Summer," The Track Leon Michels Co-produced For The Carters' Everything Is Love, Was Heard As A Sample Source On Don Toliver's Heaven Or Hell, And Only A Week After Chicano Batman Issued Their Michels-produced Invisible People, Michels' El Michels Affair Returned With Adult Themes. The First Lp Of Original El Michels Affair Material Since Their 2005 Debut, It's Not A Work Of Kitsch, As The Title Might Imply, But A Sharp -- If Smoothly Navigated -- Turn Away From The Grime And Menace Kicked Out On Their 2009 And 2017 Wu-tang Clan Tributes. Dusty Soul And Funk Are Still Felt, But It's As If The Idioms Have Been Filtered Through The More Elegant Work Of Scholarly European And British Composers Of Film And Library Music -- François De Roubaix, Piero Piccioni, And Alan Hawkshaw, For Starters -- With A Dash Or Two Of Prime David Axelrod And The Italian Job-era Quincy Jones. Some Sly Trap-styled Drums Excepted, This Is Another Time Warp For The Theater Of The Mind, And It's Neatly Tied Together With Recurring Salient Elements That Prevent It From Slipping Into Mere Background Fare." Yeti Season
New - LP - BC060-LP
Sealed 2021 Standard Black Vinyl Pressing. Cinematic Soul Meets Turkish Funk. "The "Unathi"/"Zaharila" Single Appeared In 2018 As A Fascinating Slight Diversion From El Michels Affair. Both Sides Were Fronted By 79.5 Vocalist Piya Malik Singing In Her Native Hindi. The Songs Had The Uncanny Vintage Touch Of Ema Leader Leon Michels And Took Unexpected Turns. "Unathi" Was A Kind Of Rallying Anthem Promoting Communal Advancement. The B-side, With Baleful Horns Intensifying The Distress In Malik's Voice, Hurtled To A Berserk Finish. After Ema Released The Distinctly Different Album Adult Themes, The Thread Was Picked Up Later In 2020 With Another Single Featuring Malik, The Trippy "Dhuaan," Backed By "Sha Na Na," An Alluring And Comparatively Incidental Piece With The Shacks' Shannon Wise Softly Repeating The Title. Those Four Songs, Along With The Later Single "Murkit Gem" -- Throbbing Hindi Soul/funk For The Dancefloor -- Form The Basis Of Yeti Season (Which Isn't A Concept Lp About The Folkloric Creature Of The Himalayas). Elements Of Bollywood, Blaxploitation, And Spaghetti Western Soundtracks, Along With Gnarled Psychedelia And Turkish Funk, Also Seep Through The New Material, All Of Which Is Instrumental. The Best Of The Bunch, "Fazed Out" And "Silver Lining," Put The Horns To Work. There's Some Delightful Warping Of The Ema Sound Here, And It Hopefully Won't Be The Last Time They Collaborate With Malik." AllMusic Review By Andy Kellman. more
