1975 White b label stereo. Cut corner. Features Grachan Moncur, Woody Shaw, Lamont Johnson, Scott Holt, Rashied Ali And Barbara Simmons. Tracks Are: "Soul," "Conversion Point," "Big Ben's Voice," "Dear Nick, Dear John" And "Erdu." "Bout Soul," the 1969 album by Jackie McLean, stands as a pivotal moment in the alto saxophonist's illustrious career. Emerging during a period marked by political and social upheaval, the record captures McLean's explorative spirit and commitment to pushing the boundaries of jazz. Unlike some of his earlier hard bop work, "Bout Soul" delves into the avant-garde, merging experimental techniques with deeply emotive expressions. The presence of pianist LaMont Johnson, bassist Scotty Holt, drummer Billy Higgins, and percussionist Jack DeJohnette creates a rich, textured soundscape. This ensemble facilitates McLean’s exploration of dissonance and modality, with each track serving as a testament to his quest for authenticity and depth. The album's highlight is perhaps the extended piece "Soul," where McLean's alto saxophone becomes a vessel for a raw and unfiltered emotive journey. His playing is both frenetic and contemplative, illustrating a master storyteller's ability to convey complex narratives without uttering a single word. The inclusion of vocal elements, a rarity in McLean's work, adds a layer of spiritual urgency and reflects the cultural and historical context of the late 1960s. Throughout "Bout Soul," McLean demonstrates an unwavering dedication to artistic growth and social commentary, making the album not just a product of its time, but a timeless exploration of the human condition through the lens of jazz. more

New, Unplayed Japanese Pressing With Obi. Features Mal Waldron, Doug Watkins, Art Taylor, Donald Byrd And Hank Mobley. “In 1956 Jackie McLean Was Only Beginning To Assert Himself As A True Individualist On The Alto Saxophone, Exploring The Lime-Flavored Microtones Of His Instrument That Purists Or The Misinformed Perceived As Being Off-Key Or Out Of Tune. 4, 5 And 6 Presents McLean's Quartet On Half The Date, And Tunes With An Expanded Quintet, And One Sextet Track -- Thus The Title. Mal Waldron, Himself An Unconventional Pianist Willing To Explore Different Sizings And Shadings Of Progressive Jazz, Is A Wonderful Complement For McLean's Notions, With Bassist Doug Watkins And Drummer Art Taylor The Impervious Team Everyone Wanted For His Rhythm Section At The Time. The Quartet Versions Of "Sentimental Journey," "Why Was I Born?," And "When I Fall In Love" Range From Totally Bluesy, To Hard Bop Ribald, To Pensive And Hopeful, Respectively. Donald Byrd Joins The Fray On His Easygoing Bopper "Contour," Where Complex Is Made Simple And Enjoyable, While Hank Mobley Puts His Tenor Sax To The Test On The Lone And Lengthy Sextet Track, A Rousing Version Of Charlie Parker's Risk-Laden "Confirmation." It's Waldron's Haunting Ballad "Abstraction," With Byrd And Mclean's Quick Replies, Faint And Dour, That Somewhat Illuminates The Darker Side. As A Stand-Alone Recording, 4, 5 And 6 Does Not Break Barriers, But Does Foreshadow The Future Of Mclean As An Innovative Musician In An All-Too-Purist Mainstream Jazz World.” Michael G. Bluesnik
Used Import - BST 84067
1984 French Import Vinyl Pressing. With Obi Hype Strip. "Bluesnik, Jackie McLean's Seventh Session As A Leader For Blue Note Records, Was One Of Only Two Recordings Issued By McLean In 1961. With A Lineup Of Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, Bassist Doug Watkins, Pianist Kenny Drew, And Drummer Pete La Roca, McLean Laid Down A Hard Blowing Session Of Six Tunes Based Completely On Blues Motifs. Many Critics -- As Well As Jazz Fans -- Hold To The Opinion That Bluesnik May Be McLean's Most Accessible Session For The Label. That Said, Not All Of These Tunes Are Blues Numbers Strictly Speaking. They Use Blues Forms, But Don't All Fall Into The Conventional 12-Bar Structure, And Therefore Even Move Hard Bop Paradigms A Bit. The Title Track Opening The Set Is A Prime Example Of This Given That It Quotes The Theme In 12-bar But Moves Through A Knotty Ten-Bar Sequence Before Roaring Into A Furious But Fluid Cut Time Structure That Allows For A Maximum "Stretching" Of The Changes By Drew. Drew's "Cool Green," Screws Around With The 12-bar In The Melody, But Given The Introductory Statements Made Before Each Line And In The Solo Breaks, It Too Pushes The Standard Blues Architecture. There Are The Great Moments In Blues Here That Helped To Establish McLean As A Giant, Such As "Drew's Blues," And The Lovely "Torchin'," That Closes The Set. Hubbard's Role Here Is Relatively Minor In That He Had Not Yet Established Himself As A Leader And He Was Still Growing Into His Choppy, Taut Method Of Soloing. The Swing Factor Of The Rhythm Section Is Undeniable, Especially The Interaction Between Drew And La Roca. In All, This Is A Monster Session Effortlessly Performed By A Soloist At An Early Peak With A Supporting Cast Of Blazing Sidemen." AMG - Steve Huey. more

1970 Liberty Label (Released concurrently with the blue & white label, depending on pressing plant) "Van Gelder" Machine stamped in dead wax. Strong cover. His parting shot on the Blue Note label Featuring Woody Shaw, LeMont Johnson, Scott Holt And Jack De Johnette. "Demons Dance," the posthumous album by alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, is a testament to his enduring influence in the world of jazz. Recorded in 1967 but not released until 1970, this album captures McLean's adventurous spirit and his commitment to pushing the boundaries of the genre. Known for his distinctive, sharp tone and his ability to convey deep emotion through his playing, McLean leads a quintet featuring trumpeter Woody Shaw, pianist LaMont Johnson, bassist Scotty Holt, and drummer Jack DeJohnette. From the onset, "Demons Dance" showcases McLean's knack for intricate, yet accessible melodies, and his fearless exploration of rhythm and harmony. Tracks like "Floogeh" and the title piece "Demons Dance" highlight the synergy between McLean and Shaw, whose interplay is both fiery and cohesive. LaMont Johnson's piano work adds a lyrical depth, while the rhythm section of Holt and DeJohnette provides a dynamic and flexible foundation that propels the music forward. The album stands as a powerful reminder of McLean's artistic vision, offering a snapshot of a musician unafraid to challenge conventions and explore new musical territories. more

Mclean Had Been A Major Player For A Dozen Years By Then And Was A Hard-Bop Master But He Wanted More In His Music. Destination... Out!
New - LP - 3876157
Sealed 2022 180gm Reissue, Part Of The Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series. Mastered By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio. "Like Eric Dolphy Before Him, Jackie Mclean Sought To Create A Kind Of Vanguard "Chamber Jazz" That Still Had The Blues Feel And -- Occasionally -- The Groove Of Hard Bop, Though With Rounded, Moodier Edges. Destination Out! Was The Album On Which He Found It. Still Working With Grachan Moncur Iii And Bobby Hutcherson -- His Direct Spiritual Connection To Dolphy -- Mclean Changed His Rhythm Section By Employing Drummer Roy Haynes And Bassist Larry Ridley. This Combination Proved A Perfect Balance Of The Four Elements. The Program Is Four Tunes, Three Of Which Were Written By Moncur. If There Was A Perfect Blue Note Session After John Coltrane's Blue Train, This Was It. Opening With A Ballad Was A Novel Idea In 1966, But Mclean Uses Moncur's Love And Hate To Reveal All The Tonal Possibilities Within This Group Of Musicians, And The Textural Interplay That Exists In The Heightened Sense Of Form, Time Breaks, And Rhythm Changes. As Begun On One Step Beyond, The Notion Of Interval Is Key In This Band, And An Elemental Part Of Moncur's Composition. The Horn Lines Are Spare, Haunting, Warm, And Treated As Textural Elements By Hutcherson's Vibes. On The Tune "Esoteric," Hutcherson And Haynes Throw Complex Rhythmic Figures Into The Mix. Moncur's Writing Is Angular, Resembling Ornette's Early-'60s Melodic Notions More Than Coltrane's Modal Considerations. Hutcherson's Solo Amid The Complex, Knotty Melodic Frame Is Just Sublime. "Khalil The Prophet" Is Mclean's Only Contribution Compositionally To The Album, But It's A Fine One. Using A Hard Bop Lyric And A Shape-shifting Sense Of Harmonic Interplay Between The Three Front-line Players, Mclean Moves Deeply Into A Blues Groove Without Giving Into Mere 4/4 Time Structures. The Architecture Of His Solo Is Wonderfully Obtuse, Playing An Alternating Series Of Eighths, 12ths, And Even 16ths Against Hutcherson's Wide-open Comping And Arpeggio Runs. The Set Ends With Moncur's "Riff Raff," A Strolling Blues That Makes Full Use Of Counterpoint On The Vibes. Moncur Sets His Solo Against Mclean's Melodic Engagement Of Hutcherson, Forcing Both Men Into Opposition Positions That Get Resolved In A Sultry, Funky, Shimmering Blues Groove. Of All Of Mclean's Blue Note Dates, So Many Of Which Are Classic Jazz Recordings, Destination Out! Stands As The One That Reveals The True Soulfulness And Complexity Of His Writing, Arranging, And "Singing" Voice." AMG Review By Thom Jurek. more

Sealed 1985 Cadre Rouge Audiophile Pressing With Obi. “Jackie's Bag Is Split Between Two Different Recording Sessions: The First, From January 1959, Was The First Session Jackie McLean Ever Led For Blue Note, And The Second Was A Sextet Date From September 1960 That Featured Tenor Saxophonist Tina Brooks As A Co-Leader In All But Name. According To The Liner Notes, McLean's First Date Produced Only Three Songs Of Releasable Quality, Which Are Included Here. Six Tunes Were Cut At The Brooks Session, Which Were All Issued In Japan As Street Singer, And Half Appeared On The Original Jackie's Bag LP. Given The Transitional Time Period Of The First And Brooks' Musical Taste On The Second, The Music On Jackie's Bag Finds McLean In A Staunchly Hard Bop Mode, With Occasional Hints Of Adventurousness. While McLean's Debut Performances Are Certainly Well Done, The Most Distinctive Appeal Of The Album Lies In The Brooks Collaborations. There Are Exotic Flavors To McLean's Terrific "Appointment In Ghana" And Brooks' "Isle Of Java"; Of The Newly Added Bonus Tracks, Brooks' "Medina" Has A Particularly Complex And Memorable Theme, And His "Street Singer" Was Actually Issued On His Own Back To The Tracks Album As Well. Despite Crucial Contributions From Trumpeter Blue Mitchell And Drummer Art Taylor, The Real Focal Point Of These Performances Is The Complementary Interplay Between McLean And Brooks, The Latter Of Whom Does A Nice Job Of Matching The Former's Legendarily Hard-Edged Tone. McLean Devotees Will Want This Anyway, But The Quality Of The Street Singer Material Pushes Jackie's Bag Far Beyond A Simple Gap-Plugging Historical Release.” Steve Huey, AMG. more

1975 US 2LP Reissue Housed In A Textured Gatefold Jacket. Excellent Condition Jacket, With Light Fading At Mouth Edge. Part Of The Mid-70's Blue Note Re-Issue Series. "Jackie Mclean's Jacknife Sessions Have Had A Peculiar And Somewhat Disjointed History In His Discography. Initially Issued In 1975 On A Vinyl Two-fer As Part Of The Blue Note Reissue Series, It Included Separate, Previously Unreleased Sessions From 1965 And 1966, The Former With Trumpeters Lee Morgan And Charles Tolliver, The Latter In A Quartet With Only Mclean As The Leading Horn. This 1965 Group Has Many Worthwhile And Often Challenging Moments For The Then-33-year-old Alto Saxophonist. Of The Five Tracks Here, "On The Nile," At Over 12-and-a-half Minutes, Should Be A Favorite, As Its Modern, Mainstream Modalism Weaves Larry Willis' Deep Piano Chords, Tolliver's Evocative Trumpet, And Mclean's Rich Harmonizing. Tolliver Also Wrote The Title Track, A Sour-toned Bopper On The Cutting Edge, Considering This Mid-'60s Time Frame. Mclean Penned The Tuneful, Enjoyable "Blue Fable" On The Steady Swing Side, Briefly Dishing Out Calypso Beats. Morgan's Feature Is Dejohnette's "Climax" In A Chopped-up Piano Riff With The Drummer, As A Bop Line From The Horns Takes Up The Urgent, Kinetic Charge. The Only Track With Both Trumpeters, "Soft Blue," Is Easy As The Title Suggests, Harmonic And Warm, With Solid Solos Showing The Stark Contrast Between The Approach Of The Two Brassmen And Willis' Ruminating Piano." AMG - Michael G. Nastos. more

A Young Lion Of Hard Bop In The 1950's, Altoist Jackie McLean Became One Of The Most Forward-Thinking Of The Veterans In The 1960s. His Sharp Sound, Passionate Tone And Advanced Ideas Combined With A Strong Musical Curiosity That Led Him To Explore Freer Sounds. One Step Beyond (1963) Is One Of His Greatest Triumphs On Record. Inspired By Ornette Coleman And John Coltrane But Playing Very Much In His Own Emotional Style, McLean Excels While Interacting With The Younger Musicians On This Remarkable Set. Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson Makes A Piano Redundant, Tony Williams Shows That He Was Already Strikingly Original At This Early Stage. Trombonist Grachan Moncur III Matches McLean's Passion. Especially On "Frankenstein" And "Ghost Town," McLean Creates Otherworldly Music That Still Sounds Powerful And Provocative Nearly 50 Years Later. more
