Light Shine
New - LP - BS 2790
Sealed 1974 Original. “Whether It Was Creative Fervor Or Contractual Obligation, Jesse Colin Young Was Back With A New Album Only Six Months After His Commercial And Artistic Breakthrough With Song For Juli, And Though The Album Featured More Original Songs, Young Seemed To Be Stretching For Material, Turning The Three Tunes On Side One Into A "California Suite" With Lots Of Jazzy Instrumental Work. But The Writing Was Less Important Than The Playing, As Many Of Young's Backup Musicians -- Notably Drummer Jeffrey Myer, Keyboardist Scott Lawrence And Reed Player Jim Rothermel -- Had Been With Him For A While Now And Were Playing Like A Tight Band. Some Of The Songs Were Little More Than Weather Reports ("Grey Day") Or Travelogues ("Barbados"), And When Young Did Have A Message To Convey, As In The Title Song (Repeated From The Youngbloods' Good And Dusty Album), He Could Come Off As Preachy, But The Music Was So Delightful That None Of That Mattered Much. Fans Made It Young's Highest-Charting Album Yet, And It Ranks With Song For Juli As His Biggest Seller.” William Ruhlmann, All Music. more

Song For Juli
New - LP - BS 2734
1976 US Reissue With Warner Logo In Bottom Rim Text. Still In Shrink Wrap And Includes The Original Company Inner Sleeve. Tiny Corner Dings. "Although It Was His Fourth Solo Album, Song For Juli Was Jesse Colin Young's First Full-fledged Effort Under His Own Name, Following A Couple Of Early Folk Records, A Series Of Youngbloods Albums, And The Tentative Together. Young Organized A Versatile Backup Band In Which Piano, Violin, And Horns Complemented His Tenor Voice In Arrangements That Recalled Van Morrison's Caledonia Soul Orchestra (No Surprise, Since Young And Morrison Used Several Of The Same Musicians, Notably Reed Player Jim Rothermel) And Featured Familiar Blues, Country, And Cajun Elements. In His Lyrics, Young Hewed Closely To The Current Back-to-the-land Philosophy, Celebrating His Family Life (Juli Is His Daughter) And His "Ridgetop" Retreat In Marin County, Ca. It Was A Viewpoint That Was Both Self-affirming And Xenophobic -- You Couldn't Help Thinking That The People He Wanted To Leave Him Alone And The Tourists He Wanted To Keep At Bay Included At Least A Few Of His Listeners. Of Course, That's Not The Way It Was Thought Of At The Time, And Young's Fans Responded Strongly To Song For Juli, Giving It A Higher Chart Placing Than Any Album The Youngbloods Ever Made And Keeping It In The Charts Longer Than Any Album He Ever Made." The Highway Is For Heroes
Used - LP - 661-115-1
Rare 1987 Original Still In Shrink With Original Tower Records Price Tag. A1/B1 Stampers. Appears Virtually Unplayed. “Jesse Colin Young Returned To Record-Making After Five Years With This Modestly Produced, Largely Acoustic Effort, On Which His Singing Had Taken On A Breathy Expressivenes And His Acoustic Guitar-Playing (Doubtless Due To Years Of Playing Solo Shows) Had Become More Dominant And Accomplished. Despite The Time Between Records, Young Did Not Fill The Album With New Originals -- Among The Nine Tracks, Three (T-Bone Walker's "T-Bone Shuffle," "Do It Slow," And "Before You Came") Were Remakes, One ("When You Dance") Was A Cover, And Two Others Were Co-Written. Those Two -- The Title Track, Which Young Wrote With Wendy Waldman, And "The Haster," On Which He Collaboraed With Bill Cuomo -- Were The Most Substantial New Works. "The Highway Is For Heroes" Made The Road A Metaphor For Life, And "The Master" Examined Everything From Domestic Abuse To Industrial Waste In Questioning The Nature Of Power Relationships." Together
New - LP - BS 2588
Sealed, crisp 1972 US original. Custom hype sticker on shrink. "Made while the Youngbloods were still together, Jesse Colin Young's first solo album since 1965's Young Blood was a busman's holiday on which he played favorite songs from a variety of genres -- '50s rock & roll (Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little 16"), country (the Dave Dudley hit "6 Days on the Road"), folk-blues (Mississippi John Hurt's "Creole Belle"), Chicago blues (the Butterfield Blues Band song "Born in Chicago"), and folk (Woody Guthrie's "Pastures of Plenty"). Having covered those bases, Young also introduced some timely originals, such as "Peace Song," an anti-war anthem, and "Good Times," which was very reminiscent of the rustic sound Van Morrison had found recently on such albums as Tupelo Honey. It all made for an enjoyable, if unambitious album that reached the charts for several weeks, which inspired Young to give the Youngbloods notice and, after one more album and tour with them, relaunch his solo career full-time."
