After disbanding his celebrated Bluesbreakers, Mayall sought a more roots-oriented and reflective sound, choosing to record in Los Angeles and surrounding himself with a new group of musicians. Among them were guitarist Jerry McGee, known for his session work with the Ventures and others, and bassist Larry Taylor, previously of Canned Heat.
