Dream Theory In Malaya (Fourth World Volume Two)
Used - Vinyl - EGM 114
Beautiful 1981 US Origina on Editions EG. NM- jacket, hint of ring rub. “Overwhelmingly Interesting And Extremely Variant, Jon Hassell's Dream Theory In Malaya Is Rescued From The Stereotypical New Age Recipe, Thanks To Its Ever-Changing Instrumental Structure And The Use Of Numerous Eccentric Instruments That Emerge As The Album Progresses. The Album's Concept Is Taken From An Anthropologist's 1935 Study Of A Tribe Of Malaysian Aborigines Who Made It Part Of Their Daily Routine To Discuss The Dreams They Had The Night Before. To This Story Line, Hassell Has Created A Novel And Extraordinary Set Of Instrumental Meanderings That Even Includes A Refurbished And Re-Fragmented Set Of Rhythms That Was Believed To Be Created By The Semelai Tribe. The Mixture Of Bowl Gongs, Bells, And Assorted Drums Captures The Primeval Spirit Of The Album, While Hassell's Use Of The Trumpet On All Of The Tracks Implements Some Of Today's Modern Sound Amongst The Percussiveness. Brian Eno Lends A Hand On "Courage," "Dream Theory," And "These Times," Playing Drums And Bells, While The Entire Album Was Spotlessly Engineered By Daniel Lanois. Without Coming Off As An Album That Is Restrained In Clichéd Patterns And Tempos, Jon Hassell Makes Sure The Instruments Fluctuate And Change Time Signatures On A Steady Basis, Enabling Added Attention To Be Given To The Culmination Of The Music As A Whole.” All Music Guide – Mike Degagne

Fourth World Vol. 1 - Possible Musics
Used - Vinyl - EGS 107
1980 US original. Clean jacket in EX condition. “Largely Thought Of Merely As A Mostly Stillborn Offshoot Of Brian Eno's Larger Ambient Music Series, The Fourth World Series Of Albums, In Collaboration With Trumpeter Jon Hassell, Is Actually An Entirely Separate Beast. Fourth World, Vol. 1: Possible Musics Starts Off From The Same Basic Idea As Hassell's Previous Solo Albums, Like Earthquake Island And Vernal Equinox: A Blend Of Avant-Garde Composition, Jazz Soloing, And African And Middle Eastern Rhythmic Forms. This Album Adds Only Eno's Characteristic Production Touches, Like The Reversed Echo That Adds A Ghostly, Unreal Edge To Hassell's Trumpet Solos On The Side-Long "Charm (Over Burundi Cloud)." The Rest Of The Album, Including The African Hand Drummers On The Hypnotic "Delta Rain Dream" And The Swirling, Almost Speech-Like Solos Of "Griot," Is Pure Hassell. Although This Album Was Never A Chart Hit And Has Become Surprisingly Underappreciated Over The Years, Its Influence On What Has Since Become Known As Tribal Techno Is Incalculable, As Has Its Influence On Those Art Rockers Who Have Picked Up A World Music Vibe. Peter Gabriel In Particular Owes A Fair Chunk Of His Royalty Checks From Security Onward To Jon Hassell.” All Music Guide – Stewart Mason
