Liebman, David - Sweet Hands Sweet Hands
Jazz New - LP SP 702 A&M
Sealed 1975 Original Featuring Charlie Haden, John Abercrombie, Don Alias, Richie Beirach, Gita Roy, Badal Roy And Others. “The Influence Of India Upon Jazz Had Not Been Spent Entirely When Dave Liebman And Lookout Farm Recorded The First Of His Horizon Albums, Which Pursues The East-Meets-West Direction Of His Former Employer Miles Davis, But Without The Latter's Dramatic Thrust. The Sweet Hands Refer To Those Of Tabla Player Badal Roy (A Fellow Miles Alumnus), Whose Precise Indian Rhythmic Structures Underpin And Control The Bumpy Fusion Of Indian Music And Jazz-Funk On "Sweet Hand Roy." Elsewhere, Roy's "Ashirbad" Merges Into George Harrison's "Within You, Without You," A Lovely Idea Until The Track Begins To Drift. Ever The Eclectic, Though, Liebman Does Achieve Ignition On "Dr. Faustus," Which Whips Up A Jazz-Rock-Funk Frenzy With Richie Beirach's Propulsive Electric Piano And Kibitzing Clavinet, John Abercrombie's Rock Guitar, And Liebman's Masterful, Occasionally Echoplexed Saxes. There Is Also Some Free Jazz Grooving On "Napanoch." Fascinating Music.” Richard S. Ginell, AMG.... more details

Liebman, David - Lookout Farm Lookout Farm
Jazz New - LP 1039 ECM
Sealed, Hard To Find 1975 Original. “For Saxophonist/Flutist David Liebman, The Collective Septet Lookout Farm Earmarked Him As An Emergent Band Leader And Conceptualist, Not To Mention Top-Of-The-Heap Unabashed Improviser, Especially On The Soprano. With Richie Beirach On Acoustic Piano, Identifying Him As The Post-Lennie Tristano Disciple Of The '70s, Electric Guitarist John Abercrombie, East Indian Percussionists Badal Roy And Armen Halburian, Drummer Jeff Williams, And Underrated Upright Bassist Frank Tusa, Lookout Farm's Sheer Democracy In Motion, For Progressive Modern Jazz In A Fusion Era, Defined How Far Artistically A Group Could Go While Retaining A Distinct Identity. Tack-On To That The Stunning Production Values Of ECM's Manfred Eicher, And You Have A Trend Setting Icon Of A Large Ensemble For The Ages. This One-Of-A-Kind Band And Recording Set A High-Water Mark For Far Too Few Bands, Even Unto Itself, To Follow. This Is Worth Searching For And Savoring.” - Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide.... more details

Side B Opens With A Blistering "Just One Of Those Things," Then Calms Way Down With An Original Waltz Called "Small One," Featuring Liebman On Flute, Marilyn Redfield On Vocals, And Judy Geist On Viola (Sans Bass And Drums). Liebman, David - Loneliness Of A Long Distance Runner Loneliness Of A Long Distance Runner
Jazz Used - LP CMP 24 ST CMP
1985 Gatefold Original. LP Appears Glossy, Unplayed. “David Liebman Did It Alone (Solo And Ensemble Multi-Dubbing) On The Loneliness Of A Long Distance Runner. The "Distance" On This Very Personal Program Conception Was One Of One's Life Span, With Liebman Viewing The Importance Of The Race Being Not The Finality But The Process Of The Experience. Included With This Work Are Notes By The Artist Which May Or May Not Help The Listener Relate To The Music By The Suggested Imagery Of The Notes Or Titles. The Multi Overdubs Were Particularly Well Integrated, Giving Much Of This A WSQ (World Saxophone Quartet)-Like Texture Under Liebman's Bluesy Ornette Coleman-Like Lines (A Lonely Woman-Like Phrase Recurs Throughout)...The Overdubbing Added A Great Textural Emotion And Conveys The Involvement And Harmony One Expects From A Group. Over This The Soprano Saxman Involved Himself In Some Outstanding Improvisations, Maintaining A Tension, Passion And Involvement Which Was Unfaltering.” Bob Rusch, All Music Guide.... more details

Liebman, David - If They Only Knew If They Only Knew
Jazz Used - LP SJP 151 Timeless
1980 Original Housed In A Silver Foil Cover. Appears Unplayed. “Originally Put Out By Timeless, Only To Be Issued In The U.S. On Impulse! Eight Years After The Session, The Phrase "If They Only Knew" At One Time Was Conceived As A Riposte To Liebman's Critics. But You Won't Hear Any Querulous Complaints From This Corner, For This Is A Thoughtful, Often Burning Quintet Session Carooming Off The Bumpers Of Post-Bop, Jazz-Rock, And The Avant-Garde. Liebman Is Mostly Heard On Brittle, Sometimes Volatile Tenor Throughout The Record, Even Turning In Some Fancy Bop Licks On "Autumn In New York." The Relaxed, Darting Electric Touch Comes From John Scofield, Whose Asymmetrical Guitar You Can Spot A Country Mile Away, And He Contributes The Most Attractive Tune On The Session, "Capistrano." Trumpeter Terumasa Hino Mixes It Up Pretty Well On Many Of The Tracks In His Freddie Hubbard-Derived Manner; Ron Mcclure Makes His Presence Known Up Front At All Times On Acoustic Bass; Adam Nussbaum Is Just Fine On Drums, And The Whole Thing Comes To A Furious Finish That Leaves You Wanting More.” Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide.... more details
