A Hard Road
New - LP - PS 502
Sealed 1967 Wide Band Stereo Original. “Eric Clapton Is Usually Thought Of As John Mayall's Most Important Right-Hand Man, But The Case Could Also Be Made For His Successor, Peter Green. The Future Fleetwood Mac Founder Leaves A Strong Stamp On His Only Album With The Bluesbreakers, Singing A Few Tracks And Writing A Couple, Including The Devastating Instrumental "Supernatural." Green's Use Of Thick Sustain On This Track Clearly Pointed The Way To His Use Of Guitar Riffs With Elongated, Slithery Tones On Fleetwood Mac's "Albatross" And "Black Magic Woman," As Well As Anticipating Some Aspects Of Carlos Santana's Style. Mayall Acquits Himself Fairly Well On This Mostly Original Set (With Occasional Guest Horns), Though Some Of The Material Is Fairly Mundane. Highlights Include The Uncharacteristically Rambunctious "Leaping Christine" And The Cover Of Freddie King's "Someday After A While (You'll Be Sorry).” Richie Unterberger, AMG. more

Road Show Blues
Used Import - RY-19316
1982 Canadian Original. James Quill Smith, Kevin McCormick, Soko Richardson And Maggie Parker Join Mayall. "Road Show Blues Was John Mayall's Third Album For The U.K.'s Djm Records, Following Bottom Line And No More Interviews. At This Time, His Backup Band Included Guitarist/Singer James Quill Smith, Bassist Kevin Mccormick, Drummer Soko Richardson, And Singer Maggie Parker. Two Cuts, Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me To Do" And Mayall's "Mexico City," Were Recorded Live. The Band Is A Tight Unit In Support Of The Leader, Who Sings And Plays Fiercely. By The Time That This Album, The Last In Mayall's Djm Contract, Was Recorded, His Career Was In Decline, And The Disc Was Not Released In The U.S. At The Time. It Would Be Another Five Years Before He Made Another. Through Some Corporate Legerdemain, The Record Has Bounced Around From One Company To Another And Been Reissued Several Times Under Different Titles. These Reissues Include The Adventures Of John Mayall, Road Show, And Lost And Gone. Of Course, The Mayall Fan Needs Only One, But It Does Make A Worthy Addition To The Catalog." 1995 Limited Edition, Half-Speed Mastered 200gm Anadisc. This Is Number 2261. If We Graded This LP On Liner Notes Alone It Would Rank Up There With The Best. John Peel Spins Classic Yarn Giving Us A Perspective That Provides History, Insight and Data Bringing Us Closer To the Artist And His Work. The Liner Notes Were A Main Component To The Record Experience, Now Its So Far And Few Between. "The Blues Alone" is a studio album by British blues musician John Mayall. It was released in 1967 by the Decca label. The album is unique in Mayall's discography for featuring him as the only musician, playing all the instruments himself. Mayall had been leading the Bluesbreakers, a band that had gone through several line-up changes, since the early 1960s. But by the mid-1960s, he had grown disillusioned with the difficulties of keeping a band together and the expectations placed on him as a bandleader. He decided to record an album entirely on his own, showcasing his talents as a multi-instrumentalist. "The Blues Alone" was recorded over three days in December 1966. Mayall played all the instruments himself, including guitar, harmonica, keyboards, and drums. The album features mostly original songs, with a few covers of blues standards. The album was released to critical acclaim and became a favorite among blues fans. It is considered an important milestone in Mayall's career and a seminal album in the development of British blues. The album's stripped-down sound and raw energy influenced many later musicians, including Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones. Mayall went on to record many more albums over the following decades, with various line-ups of the Bluesbreakers and other musicians. But "The Blues Alone" remains a landmark in his career and a testament to his skills as a musician and songwriter. more

The Sun Is Shining Down
Colored Vinyl - New - FBR 026LP
Sealed 2022 Original, Pressed On Limited Edition Translucent Blue Vinyl. "Just After His 88th Birthday In 2021, John Mayall, The Long-Reigning King Of British Blues, Announced He Was Hanging Up His Road Shoes. He Also Noted That He Would Continue To Record And Felt Excited By The Work He Was Doing. The Sun Is Shining Down (Album Number 60) Was Completed Just Before That Announcement. As Evidenced Here, His Ability To Write And Record Vital Modern Blues With Excellent Musicians Continues Unabated. These Ten Tracks Showcase A Cast Of Invited All-star Guests; Most Are Guitar Slingers -- After All, This Is The Man Who Gave Us Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, And Countless Others. His Own Band Comprises Guitarist Carolyn Wonderland, Bassist Greg Rzab, Drummer Jay Davenport, And A Horn Section For The Proceedings. Mayall Sings, Plays Piano, Wurlitzer, Hammond B-3, And Harmonica. Opener "Hungry And Ready" Is A Swinging Chicago Blues With Mississippi-Born Bluesman Melvin Taylor Playing Lead Guitar Atop Hard-grooving Horns. Mayall, In Excellent Voice, Still Plays A Deft, Wailing Harmonica. Taylor's Solo Is Mean And Winding. South Carolina Blues Hero Marcus King Takes The Lead Chair For "Can't Take No More," A Funky Roadhouse Blues Driven By B-3 And A Cracking Drum Kit. King Lays Down Layer After Layer Of Tasty Guitar Fills. Former Heartbreaker And Current Fleetwood Mac Axeman Mike Campbell Guests On Bernard Allison's "Chills And Thrills," Offering His Funky, Yet Precise Economical Style As The Perfect Foil For Mayall's Voice And Evil B-3. Buddy Miller Adds A Nasty Blues Tone And Grimy Solo To "I'm As Good As Gone." Violinist Scarlet Rivera Accompanies The Band On "Deep Blue Sea." Her Sweeping Fills And Labyrinthine Solo Expand The Tune's Frame To The Breaking Point, And Mayall's Piano Work Is Exemplary, Coming Right Out Of The Stride And Nola Traditions, Adding Color And Texture With A Wurlitzer. Ukulele Innovator Jake Shimabukuro Trades Tasty, Snarling Lines With Wonderland On "One Special Lady" (A Jump Blues) As Mayall's B-3 Prods The Band To Support Them. Taylor Tears It Up Again On A Cover Of Roosevelt Sykes' "Driving Wheel." His Stinging Fills Punctuate Each Sung Line As The Horns Stroll And Roil Underneath. Wonderland Shines As A Soloist On The Closing Title Track. Her Sinister, Steamy Blues, Razor-Wire Fills, And Accents Bubble And Bump Atmospherically Around And Under Mayall's Organ And Moaning Vocal While The Band Shuffles, Swells, And Vamps All Around Them. Wonderland Doesn't Merely Trade Lines With Mayall, She Offers A Tight, Soulful Solo And Plays Call-and-response With Herself, Offering Tight Lines And Smoky Phrases. Hopefully, Life Goes According To Plan And Mayall Gets To Deliver Many More Recordings Before He's Done, Because The Sun Is Shining Down Sounds Hungry And Vital. Mayall Delivers These Rough-and-ready Blues Like A Champ." AMG Review By Thom Jurek. more
The Turning Point

1969 Original. Features Johnny Almond, Steve Thompson And Jon Mark. RL In Deawax. Strong VG+ Copy. “This Prophetically Titled Project Represents Yet Another Crossroad In John Mayall's Ever Evolving Cast Of Prime British Bluesmen. This Album Also Signifies A Distinct Departure From The Decibel Drowning Electrified Offerings Of His Previous Efforts, Providing Instead An Exceedingly More Folk And Roots Based Confab. Mayall (Vocals/Harmonica/Slide Guitar/Telecaster Six-String/Hand & Mouth Percussion) Joined Forces With Former Associates Steve Thompson (Bass) And Johnny Almond (Tenor & Alto Sax/Flute/Mouth Percussion), Then Added The Talents Of Jon Mark (Acoustic Finger-Style Guitar). It Becomes Readily Apparent That Mark's Precision And Tasteful Improvisational Skills Place This Incarnation Into Heady Spaces. The Taut Interaction And Wafting Solos Punctuating "So Hard To Share" Exemplify The Controlled Intensity Of Mayall's Prior Electrified Outings. Likewise, Mark's Intricate Acoustics Pierce Through The Growl Of Mayall's Haunting Slide Guitar Solos On "Saw Mill Gulch Road." The Turning Point Also Examines A Shift In Mayall's Writing. The Politically Charged "Laws Must Change," The Personal "I'm Gonna Fight For You J.B." And The Incomparable "Room To Move" Are Tinged With Mayall's Trademark Sense Of Irony And Aural Imagery.” Lindsay Planer, AMG. more

Mayall (Vocals/Harmonica/Slide Guitar/Telecaster Six-String/Hand & Mouth Percussion) Joined Forces With Former Associates Steve Thompson (Bass) And Johnny Almond (Tenor & Alto Sax/Flute/Mouth Percussion), Then Added The Talents Of Jon Mark (Acoustic Finger-Style Guitar). It Becomes Readily Apparent That Mark's Precision And Tasteful Improvisational Skills Place This Incarnation Into Heady Spaces. The Taut Interaction And Wafting Solos Punctuating "So Hard To Share" Exemplify The Controlled Intensity Of Mayall's Prior Electrified Outings. Likewise, Mark's Intricate Acoustics Pierce Through The Growl Of Mayall's Haunting Slide Guitar Solos On "Saw Mill Gulch Road." The Turning Point Also Examines A Shift In Mayall's Writing. The Politically Charged "Laws Must Change," The Personal "I'm Gonna Fight For You J.B." And The Incomparable "Room To Move" Are Tinged With Mayall's Trademark Sense Of Irony And Aural Imagery.” Lindsay Planer, AMG. more
