Blues At Carnegie Hall
Used - Vinyl - SD 1468
Circa 1975 US gatefold reissue, Presswell pressing with Warner logo in rim text. NM- jacket with wrinkle at spine. Their classic Carnegie Hall concert recorded in 1965. "Blues at Carnegie Hall is a live Atlantic set from 1966, with the Modern Jazz Quartet performing eight blues-based compositions. In addition to such familiar pieces as the inevitable "Bags' Groove," "Ralph's New Blues" (dedicated to jazz critic Ralph Gleason), and "The Cylinder," there are a few newer pieces (including "Home," which is similar to Lee Morgan's hit "The Sidewinder") included for variety. This predictable but consistently swinging set is particularly recommended to fans of vibraphonist Milt Jackson." All Music Guide – Scott Yanow

1994 Limited, numbered audiophile reissue from Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab; #0310. Blues On Bach
Used - Vinyl - SD 1652
1974 US original Monarch promo copy. Saw cut and scotch tape along bottom seam. First pressing on Rockefeller labels with no Warner Communications logo. Promo sticker affixed to jacket. Scotch tape along bottom seam. "This album has an interesting concept, alternating four original blues with five adaptations of melodies from classical works by Bach. The Modern Jazz Quartet had long been quite adept in both areas, and despite a certain lack of variety on this set (alternating back and forth between the two styles somewhat predictably), the music is largely enjoyable. Vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist John Lewis (doubling here on harpsichord), bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay were still all very much in their musical prime during the 21st year of the MJQ's existence." European Concert
New - Vinyl - SD 2-603
Sealed 2LP Stereo Gatefold (Label Variation Unknown, But We Believe This Heavy Package Is The Blue & Green Label First Issue) “Long Considered One Of, If Not THE Classic Album From The Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert Defines Them Simultaneously As A Recording Entity As Well As A Working Band. MJQ Presented Jazz In The Context Of A Formally Structured Environment, Much Like A Chamber Group In The Classical Context. Within The Band, The Groove Of Milt Jackson's Vibes Met The Solid Swing Of Connie Kay's Drums, The Funky Strut Of Percy Heath's Bass, And The Elegant Classicism Of John Lewis's Piano. The MJQ Were Able, In A Context That Pushed At Jazz's Boundaries From The Outside, To Create A Music That Swung Without Edges Or Fragmented Harmonic Structures. The Show Included The Finest Moments Of Their Early Recording Career In A Live Setting. One Listen To "Django" Will Make Your Head Swim, With Its Sparse Rhythmic Texture That Is Still Driving And Lewis' Rag Melody Line When It Encounters The Pure Stretch Of The Polytonal Rhythms Jackson Is Laying Down. If It Weren't For Heath The Entire Thing Would Become Unglued, Because He Was The Hinge On This Set. Top Recommendation.” Thom Jurek, AMG.

1975 US reissue; Presswell pressing with Warner logo in rim text. Their first album on Atlantic. "This LP has a particularly strong all-around set by the Modern Jazz Quartet. While John Lewis' "Versailles" and an 11-minute "Fontessa" show the seriousness of the group (and the influence of Western classical music), other pieces (such as "Bluesology," "Woody 'N You" and a pair of ballads) look toward the group's roots in bop and permit the band to swing hard." In Memoriam
Used - Vinyl - LD 3001
Clean 1974 US original promo copy; "Not For Sale" printed on labels. Light crease on jacket. John Lewis (piano and composer), Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Percy Heath (bass), and Connie Kay (drums)—had regrouped after a brief hiatus, and this recording reflected both their renewed artistic vigor and a contemplative homage to the past. The album also features "Jazz Ostinato" and "Adagio from the Guitar Concerto: Concierto de Aranjuez," further exemplifying the group's penchant for integrating classical works and techniques into their repertoire. The Modern Jazz Quartet's approach on "In Memoriam" is marked by their signature restraint, elegance, and intricate interplay, serving both as a reflection on musical legacies and as an assertion of their own place within jazz history. The record stands as a testament to the group's long-standing commitment to sophisticated musical fusion and serves as a significant chapter in the MJQ's storied evolution.

Live At The Lighthouse
Audiophile - Used - MFSL 1-090
1984 Half-Speed Mastered Rarity Pressed In Japan By JVC. Two corner dings/bumps. "This fairly obscure LP by the Modern Jazz Quartet features fresh material and improvisations that are both swinging and creative. Pianist John Lewis' "The Spiritual" and "Baseball," along with vibraphonist Milt Jackson's "Novamo" and "For Someone I Love," comprise half the program, and it is Jackson's influence that seems to be the weightier one here. Jackson and the MJQ always rose to the challenge of a crowd. There are also excellent ballad renditions of "The Shadow of Your Smile" and "What's New." The bluesier side of the band is what's mostly on display here, and the MJQ plays up to its usual level. None of the classic group's recordings should be passed by." All Music Guide – Scott Yanow

Lonely Woman
Used Import - P-7547A
Beautiful 1977 Japanese reissue without Obi but has insert; Price code is "¥2,200". "Having sponsored Ornette Coleman at the School of Jazz near Lennox, MA, pianist and composer John Lewis helped launch the controversial career of one of the last great innovators in jazz. Lewis' support of the ragtag Texas native was somewhat unique in jazz circles at the time and even surprising, especially considering the gulf between the classical jazz formality of his group the Modern Jazz Quartet and Coleman's radical notions of free improvisation. Nevertheless, Lewis not only saw in Coleman the first jazz genius since bebop's Parker, Gillespie, and Monk, but put pay to the praise with the MJQ's 1962 rendition of one of Coleman's most famous numbers, "Lonely Woman." (Along with Art Pepper's 1960 version of "Tears Inside," this was one of the earliest of Coleman covers done.) The 1962 Atlantic album of the same name turns out to be one of the band's best efforts. Lewis and fellow MJQ members Milt Jackson, Percy Heath, and Connie Kaye capitalize on the dramatic theme of "Lonely Woman" while adding a bit of chamber music complexity to the mix. The quartet doesn't take Coleman's free form harmolodic theory to heart with a round of quixotic solos, but the group does spotlight the often overlooked strength of his compositional ideas. And while the MJQ further plies its knack for involved pieces on Lewis originals like "Fugato" and "Trieste," the group also balances out the set with looser material more in tune with Jackson's blues and swing sensibilities. A great disc that's perfect for the curious jazz lover." All Music Guide – Stephen Cook

Plastic Dreams
New - Vinyl - SMAS-94000
Sealed 1971 2nd Issue Record Club Gatefold (We Believe These Were Pressed By Capitol). "This Was As Close As The MJQ Ever Got To Making A Pop Album, And The Production Work Of Arif Mardin Reflects That Idea. The Opener, "Walkin' Stomp," Reasserts This Concept In A Big Way; It Is As Far Into Playing Pure Funk That The MJQ Ever Got, With Percy Heath Laying Down A Solid Groove And Milt Jackson Contributing A Brilliant, Blazing Solo. While There Is Nothing Else In The MJQ's Book Like "Trav'lin," Martin Williams Stated That It Was "Another One Reminiscent Of Their Early Pieces." The Title Track, "Plastic Dreams," Is A Reflective And Relaxed Tune That Benefits From Lewis' Employment Of The Harpsichord Over The Piano. The Version Of "Piazza Navona" Here Utilizes Five Horns And Is Like An Entirely Different Composition From The One That Appeared On The Comedy And Lewis' Album The Golden Striker In 1960. It Has An Irresistibly Catchy, Entirely New Introductory Figure That Winds Its Way Through The Piece, And Once You Hear It On Plastic Dreams, You'll Miss It When You Listen To The Older Versions. Despite The Lukewarm Criticism That Has Attended To It, Plastic Dreams Is One Of The MJQ's Most Exploratory Efforts, Though In The Opposite Direction From Albums Like Third Stream Music. As Such, Plastic Dreams Deserves Pride Of Place As One Of The Late, And Last, High-Water Marks To Be Found Among Their Studio Work During Their Regular Period Of Activity, And It Remains One Of The Most Hip Sounding And Easily Enjoyed Of The MJQ's Albums More Than Thirty Years On." Uncle Dave Lewis, AMG.

Plays For Lovers
Used - Vinyl - PR 7421
1960 Stereo Compilation in shrink. In "Plays for Lovers," the Modern Jazz Quartet offers a collection that is both a testament to their sophisticated and nuanced approach to jazz and a tender exploration of the genre's romantic side. The album, which compiles tracks recorded between the 1950s and 1960s, showcases the group's impeccable interplay and subtle, yet profound, artistry. At the heart of their sound is the seamless integration of John Lewis's elegant piano lines with Milt Jackson's soulful vibraphone melodies, underpinned by Percy Heath's resonant bass and Connie Kay's understated drumming. The Quartet's ability to balance intricate arrangements with emotional depth is evident throughout the album, making it a quintessential listen for those who appreciate the softer, more introspective facets of jazz.
Renowned for their ability to blend classical influences with the spontaneity of jazz, the Modern Jazz Quartet employs this approach to great effect on "Plays for Lovers." Each track is rendered with a meticulous attention to detail, yet retains a sense of warmth and intimacy that invites the listener into a world of subtle passion and refined emotion. The album serves not only as a showcase of the group's technical prowess and compositional skill but also as a reminder of the quartet's unique place in the history of jazz. Their music, often characterized by its restraint and elegance, finds a perfect expression in this collection, offering a listening experience that is both soothing and profoundly engaging.

1962 Blue & Green Label Stereo 2nd Press In Shrink. The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was formed in 1952 and was made up of John Lewis on piano, Milt Jackson on vibraphone, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. "Pyramid" was the 10th studio album by the MJQ and was recorded in August 1959 in New York City. The album features a mix of original compositions by John Lewis, as well as covers of songs by other jazz musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. The title track, "Pyramid," was inspired by Egyptian architecture and features a complex, polyrhythmic structure that was characteristic of the MJQ's style. The album also includes the popular jazz standard "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," which was originally written by Duke Ellington.

Used - Vinyl - SD 2-909
1975 2LP gatefold original recorded at Avery Fisher Hall November 25th, 1974. NM- jacket. Produced by Ilhan Mimaroglu. The Modern Jazz Quartet, established in 1952, was an influential American jazz ensemble renowned for its sophisticated integration of classical music structures with jazz improvisation—a style sometimes referred to as "third stream." The group’s core lineup featured vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist John Lewis, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay. Their refined approach, formal presentation, and innovative compositions helped redefine the boundaries of jazz, making them central figures in the post-bop era and appealing to both jazz aficionados and classical music enthusiasts alike.

The Legendary Profile
Used - Vinyl - SD 1623
Circa 1975 US reissue; Monarch pressing with Warner logo in rim text. "This is an MJQ album that, for most fans, is somewhat off the beaten path. At a time when they had left Apple Records to return to Atlantic, and when fusion was just getting started, the group incorporate more Brazilian music in the mix, and John Lewis plays Fender Rhodes electric piano on two tracks. While their laid-back, mellow, chamber-like sound is very much intact, the rules of sonic preparation had changed, and the band followed in kind. Drummer Connie Kay even adds a bit of R&B funk to the proceedings, as on the chunky opener and title track, which is very atypical for the group. One of two Lewis originals, "Valeria" is a light bossa nova, energized as it goes along, while the absolute beauty of "Romance" is marinated in waltz pace with accenting cymbal zings -- the perfect candlelight-and-wine dinner music. Milt Jackson's work on vibes never wavered over the years since his early bop days in Detroit, and he sounds as good as ever throughout the proceedings. The tracks where Lewis plays Rhodes include a long, tender, Latin-flavored version of Tim Hardin's "Misty Roses" in as foggy a mood as possible, and the shimmering ballad of Jackson's "The Martyr," where Kay's overtly cascading bells turn the piece completely atmospheric. Covering the pop song "What Now My Love?," in demure shades of late-night Rio, is in their comfort zone, but it's not the most substantive tune they have ever interpreted. Not an essential item in their catalog, this is reserved strictly for completists." All Music Guide – Michael G. Nastos

The Modern Jazz Quartet Plays George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess
Used - Vinyl - SD-1440
Circa 1968 US Richmond reissue on red & green Broadway labels, housed in a laminated jacket. Saw cut at top seam. “The Modern Jazz Quartet, A Group Legendary For It's Feats During Their Heyday In The Cool Bop Period Of Jazz Music, Shares With The Listener A Brilliant Effort Encompassing Their Impression Of Composer George Gershwin's "Porgy And Bess." Acclaimed By Encyclopedia Britannica As "The Greatest American Musical Drama Ever Written," The Modern Jazz Quartet Perform It At The Highest Level Of Creative Flair To Pay Homage To A Marvel Of Composition With The Utmost Degree Of Sincerity And Respect. This Is A Piece That Gershwin Took A Full 11 Months To Compose And Nine Months To Orchestrate, All Based On The Initial Inspiration From A Drama Written By Playwright Dorothy Heyward. Opening Up The Score Is Gershwin's Dazzling And Seductive Tune "Summertime," A Landslide Mark Of Musical Brilliance. So Daring And Stylish Do The Quartet Seem, That They Bring Quite A Sense Of Dynamics And Energy To The Performance. The Percussive Textures Of Connie Kay On Drums And Percy Heath On Bass Blend In Beautifully With The Lush Dual Sound Of John Lewis On Piano And Milt Jackson On The Vibraharp. The Second Tune, "Bess, You Is My Women," Is An Up-Tempo Delight Of Soaring Swing, With A Combination Of Dashing Walking Basslines And Sweetly Decorated Melody Chops. "My Man's Gone Now" Is A Savvy Piece That Deeply Grips The Listener's Soul And Sweeps Them Away. Alluring And Charming In Content, One Can Sincerely Feel The Band Has Spoken Confidently, Not Diminishing Its Avant-Garde Form. Two Other Tunes Of Note On The Record Are "I Love Porgy," A Sentimental And Softly Done Ballad, And "It Ain't Necessarily So," Quite A Mesmerizing Tune Encompassing A Vast Array Of Changing Meters. Sweetly Syncopated, This Jam Is Quite A Roller Coaster Ride. The Modern Jazz Quartet Is Alive And Well In This Effort, Thoroughly Brewing With Overbearing Optimism. Lavish In Orchestration, Shining With Dexterity, It Is No Wonder That It Is Rare To Find Such A Group That Can Emulate George Gershwin's Work With Such Spontaneity And Prowess. The Music Is Felt In The Text Of A Discretely Tight Yet Unpredictable Setting, Yet The Band Doesn't Fail To Go Overboard On Taste. Well Versed In Direction And Refreshing In Statement, The Modern Jazz Quartet Invents Gershwin In A New Fashion, With A Personality In And Of Their Own.” Shawn M. Haney, AMG.

The Sheriff
Used Import - P-7549A
1976/1977 Japanese reissue without Obi but has insert. Released for the Japanese "Jazz-Forever Excellent" series, from Warner-Pioneer. "Recorded in 1963, The Sheriff features the Modern Jazz Quartet in fine swinging form. The program is not as sharply focused as on some of the earlier Atlantic releases, but it is compelling nonetheless. There are four originals by pianist John Lewis, including the fleeting, bluesy title cut, and the moody, spacious "In a Crowd" -- originally composed for the 1961 film A Milanese Story. Its stepped-up time signature and series of phrases played by Milt Jackson grounds the tune in blues, but Lewis' solo feels more like a solo trumpet breezing through the center. The set includes Heitor Villa-Lobos' "Bachianas Brasileiras," a classical piece the quartet first performed with guitarist Laurindo Almeida. Bassist Percy Heath is stellar here, playing both arco and pizzicato and alternately moving the work forward with deftness and precision. Lewis and Jackson engage in gorgeous counterpoint throughout. It's knotty, but exotic and beautiful. Another Latin-based work here is Luiz Bonfa's brilliant "Carnival," which closes the set. Jackson's melodic interplay with Connie Kay's brushwork is subtle and rich, moving through a series of verses before Jackson takes it to the blues in his solo. Lewis keeps the pulse as Heath underscores the backbeat." All Music Guide – Thom Jurek

Sealed Stereo Original. The quartet's signature blend of classical, blues, and bebop influences is on full display here, with each member contributing their own distinct voice to the ensemble. Pianist John Lewis's lush harmonies set the tone for the album, while Milt Jackson's vibraphone and Percy Heath's bass provide a rich, textured backdrop.
But perhaps the real standout on this record is drummer Connie Kay, whose propulsive rhythms and intricate fills drive each track forward with a sense of urgency and excitement.
In short, "The Sheriff" is a must-listen for the Jazz collector who appreciates the MJQ.

1976 Japanese reissue housed in a beautiful matte jacket; No Obi but has insert. Featuring Special Guests, Jimmy Giuffre and The Beaux Arts String Quartet. "This Atlantic release has some unusual performances by the Modern Jazz Quartet. Two selections ("Da Capo" and "Fine") combine the MJQ, which is comprised of vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist John Lewis, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay, with the Jimmy Giuffre 3 (Giuffre on clarinet and tenor, with guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Ralph Pena) on "Exposure"; six chamber classical musicians add color, and a pair of other numbers ("Conversation" and the very successful "Sketch") match the MJQ with the Beaux Arts String Quartet. There is plenty of thought-provoking music on this disc even if the idea of creating a third stream between jazz and classical music never came to pass." All Music Guide – Scott Yanow
