Velvet Underground

Vinyl Records and Rare LPs:

1966
New - LP - RS002
Sealed 1981 Reissue Of This Legendary Live Recording. “This Velvet Underground Bootleg LP Was Originally Recorded During An Exploding Plastic Inevitable Show At The Valleydale Ballroom In Columbus, Ohio, On November 4, 1966. Although The Velvet Underground Performed Two Sets At Valleydale, This LP Consists Of Only The First And Last Pieces Played, "Melody Laughter," And "The Nothing Song." The Original, Deliberately Minimal Package Did Not Identify The Songs By Title. This Bootleg Was Issued By Cincinnati Record Store Manager Bernd Baierschmidt, Who Had Attended The Original Velvets Gig At The Valleydale, In Addition To The One Held At The Topper Club In Cincinnati The Night Before. Most Sources Credit Dick Felton As The Original Recording Engineer. Baierschmidt Was In Possession Of A Reel-To-Reel Copy Of The Entire Show, But Selected The Two Longest Pieces In The Set, As He Felt That They Represented An Important Side Of The Velvet Underground Then Unrepresented On Record -- Their Legendary, Long, In-Concert Improvisations. Nico Was Still In The Group At This Early Stage Of The Velvets' History, And Contributes Eerie, Wordless Vocals To The Noisy Proceedings, Dominated By Feedback Solos, Droning Guitars, And Tribal Drumming From Maureen Tucker..” – Uncle Dave Lewis more
1969 Velvet Underground Live
New - LP - SRM-2-7504
Sealed 1974 2LP Gatefold Original, Small COH. "Sadly, Outside Of A Handful Of Audience Tapes Of Extremely Variable Fidelity, No One Thought To Make A Live Recording Of The Velvet Underground During Their 1967-68 Peak Period With John Cale Prodding Lou Reed Into Remarkable Flights Of Noise Rock Fancy. However, In 1969 A VU Fan Who Was A Recording Engineer Brought A Reel-To-Reel Tape Machine To Two Shows The Band Played During An Engagement At A Club In Dallas Called The End Of Cole Avenue; A Few Months Later, The Band Played The Matrix In San Francisco, Where A Tape Machine Had Been Installed Into The Hall's Sound System, And The Band Was Allowed To Record Their Set. Five Years Later, Long After The Velvet Underground Had Collapsed And Lou Reed's Solo Career Was On The Rise, Mercury Records Compiled Highlights Of The Dallas And San Francisco Tapes Into A Two-Record Set, 1969: Velvet Underground Live, And It Is Without Question The Best (Legally-Released) Document Of This Band's Considerable Strengths As A Live Act. From The Delicacy Of "New Age" And "I'll Be Your Mirror" To The Rave-Up Energy Of "What Goes On" And "White Light/White Heat," 1969: Velvet Underground Live Captures The Many Sides Of Their Musical Personality With Commendable Skill, And While It Isn't Their Best Album, It's One Of The Best Places For A Beginner To Explore Their Body Of Work." - Mark Deming, AMG more

Live At Max's Kansas City
Used - LP - SD 9500
80's Red Label Pressing. There's a certain amount of disagreement among Velvet Underground scholars regarding whether or not this album, recorded by Andy Warhol associate and longtime fan Brigid Polk on a portable cassette recorder on August 23, 1970, does in fact document Lou Reed's final appearance with the VU. If this wasn't his last stand with the group, it was certainly close to the end of the line, and while the performance is technically strong, it isn't especially inspired, with Reed sounding more than a bit weary. (At this point, the band was near the end of a three-month residency at Max's, doing recording sessions for Loaded during the day, a schedule that would tax most performers.) The absence of Maureen Tucker on drums (who was pregnant and sitting out the Max's shows) makes an even bigger difference; the replacement of her steady, tribal pulse in favor of Billy Yule's busy, sometimes sloppy style does these songs no favors. But there are a few lovely moments, including rare live performances of "After Hours" and "Sunday Morning," and Reed and Sterling Morrison lock guitars with their usual authority on "Waiting for the Man" and "Beginning to See the Light." The audio quality isn't great, but given the circumstances it's better than you might expect (it's OK by the standards of an early-'70s bootleg), though historical merit seems to be more the issue than high fidelity. And yes, that really is Jim Carroll ordering double Pernods and asking about the availability of Tuinal between songs. Fun for fans, but 1969: Velvet Underground Live is a much stronger document of this band's on-stage prowess. AMG - Mark Deming more

New - LP - R1-9034
Sealed, Latest Press Of The 2014 Reissue. The Final Album With Lou Reed, Featuring Classic Tracks "Rock & Roll" And "Sweet Jane". "After The Velvet Underground Cut Three Albums For The Jazz-Oriented Verve Label That Earned Them Lots Of Notoriety But Negligible Sales, The Group Signed With Industry Powerhouse Atlantic Records In 1970; Label Head Ahmet Ertegun Supposedly Asked Lou Reed To Avoid Sex And Drugs In His Songs, And Instead Focus On Making An Album "Loaded With Hits." Loaded Was The Result, And With Appropriate Irony It Turned Out To Be The First Vu Album That Made Any Noticeable Impact On Commercial Radio -- And Also Their Swan Song, With Reed Leaving The Group Shortly Before Its Release. With John Cale Long Gone From The Band, Doug Yule Highly Prominent (He Sings Lead On Four Of The Ten Tracks), And Maureen Tucker Absent On Maternity Leave, This Is Hardly A Purist's Velvet Underground Album. But While Lou Reed Always Wrote Great Rock & Roll Songs With Killer Hooks, On Loaded His Tunes Were At Last Given A Polished But Intelligent Production That Made Them Sound Like The Hits They Should Have Been, And There's No Arguing That "Sweet Jane" And "Rock And Roll" Are As Joyously Anthemic As Anything He's Ever Recorded. And If This Release Generally Maintains A Tight Focus On The Sunny Side Of The Vu's Personality (Or Would That Be Reed's Personality?), "New Age" And "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" Prove He Had Hardly Abandoned His Contemplative Side, And "Train Around The Bend" Is A Subtle But Revealing Metaphor For His Weariness With The Music Business. Sterling Morrison Once Said Of Loaded, "It Showed That We Could Have, All Along, Made Truly Commercial Sounding Records," But Just As Importantly, It Proved They Could Do So Without Entirely Abandoning Their Musical Personality In The Process. It's A Pity That Notion Hadn't Occurred To Anyone A Few Years Earlier." AMG Review By Mark Deming. more

Squeeze
Used Import - 2383 180
1973 UK Original, Still In Shrink With Custom Import Hype Sticker Affixed To Shrink. "Not As Bad As You Might Think Doesn’t Seem Like High Praise, But When It Comes To Squeeze -- The Album Doug Yule Released Under The Velvet Underground’s Name After The Departure Of Lou Reed -- It Kind Of Is. Commonly Regarded As An Opportunistic, Misguided Disaster, A Boneheaded Attempt To Carry On The Legendary Velvets Sound Without Any Of The Original Members, The Reputation Of Squeeze Is Nothing Short Of Abysmal -- But The Thing About That Reputation Is That It Comes From People Who Have Never Heard The Album. Most People Have Never Heard The Album -- It’s Been Buried And Rarely Heard, So It’s Been Accepted As Common Knowledge That It’s Awful And The Truth Is, It’s Not. Now, It’s Not Great, It May Not Even Be Good, And In Many Ways, It Is Indeed A Bit Of A Sacrilege To What Lou, John, Sterling, And Mo Created, A Comparison Doug Yule Courts By Going Out Of His Way To Create A Commercial Rewrite Of Loaded, Almost Following Its Flow And Topics Track By Track. The Plagiarism Is Shameless -- And Also Misguided, Because If Nobody Bought Loaded In The First Place, Who Would Want A Glossy Version Of It? -- But It’s Also The Charm Of Squeeze Because Yule And His Studio Cats, Headed By Deep Purple Drummer Ian Paice, Do Create Something That’s A Square, Cheerful Knock-off Of Loaded, Containing None Of The Depth Or Innovation, But A Little Bit Of Its Sunny Swing. That’s Hardly Enough To Make It Unfairly Maligned -- After All, It Doesn’t Just Ride The Coattails Of Vu’s Legacy But Deliberately Co-opts Their Achievement -- But It’s Listenable, Something Its Reputation Never Suggests, And In A Way, It’s Almost Fun To Hear Yule Ape Reed, Provided That Such Shameless Mimicry Does Not Offend Your Sensibilities." This Superb Live Date Was Taped There On Friday, July 11th, And Finds The Quartet Performing Numerous Tracks From Their Recently Released Eponymous Third Album (1969), As Well As Epic Renditions Of "Run Run Run" And "Sister Ray" - An Essential Document Of A Great Band At Their Peak. more
The Velvet Underground (A Documentary Film By Todd Haynes) (Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack)
New - LP - B0034409-01
Sealed 2022 2LP Soundtrack Compilation. "Arguably The Most Important And Influential American Rock Band Of The Second Half Of The 1960s, The Velvet Underground Weren't Much Like Any Other Group Of Their Time, And Neither Was The Story Of How They Came Together. Their Genesis Had More To Do With Beat Poetry, Outlaw Literature, Experimental Composition, Avant-garde Art, And The Rise Of Multimedia Installations Than The Usual Formula Of Folks Getting Together To Drink Beer And Play "Louie Louie" (Not To Say The Latter Isn't A Noble Pursuit). Filmmaker Todd Haynes Has Done A Superb Job Of Charting The Course Of How They Came Together And What Informed Their Work In His 2021 Documentary The Velvet Underground. The Film Is Not Only A Fine Biography Of The Band, It's A Great Crash Course In The Intersections Of Various Creative Media That Were A Vital Part Of The New York Art Community In The Early To Mid-'60s. The Velvet Underground: A Documentary Film By Todd Haynes Is The Soundtrack Album To The Movie, And It Reflects The Trajectory Of The Film Rather Than Offering A Compact History Of Their Recorded Catalog. As In Haynes' Documentary, Not All The Music Is By The Vu. "17 Xii 63 Nyc The Fire Is A Mirror" Is A Piece By Lamonte Young's Experimental Ensemble The Theatre Of Eternal Music, Where John Cale Learned Some Of The Drone Techniques And Chaotic Viola Patterns He Would Later Bring To The Velvets. "The Wind" By Nolan Strong And The Diablos Is A Haunting Bit Of Doo Wop That Beguiled Lou Reed As A Teenager, And Bo Diddley's "Road Runner" (Featured Here In An Especially Gritty Live Take) Is A Tribute To The Inspired Artist Who Influenced Everyone In The Band. And "The Ostrich," By The Primitives, Was One Of The Great Hack Pop Tunes Lou Reed Cranked Out As A Staff Songwriter At Pickwick Records That Offered Glimmers Of What He Would Create In The Future. Among The Velvet Underground Tracks On The Album, "Heroin" Is Presented In Its Monophonic Mix, "Sister Ray" And "After Hours" Are Rare Live Takes That Document Them In Front Of An Audience, And "Chelsea Girls" Was Penned By Lou Reed And Sterling Morrison For Nico's First Solo Album, Their Only Co-writing Credit. The Album Is An Excellent Companion To An Excellent Film, But It's Probably Best Appreciated By Folks Who've Seen Haynes' Movie; Taken On Its Own, It's All Great Music, But The Through-line Of These Songs And The Occasional Curiosity Of The Sequencing Reflects Haynes' Choices As A Filmmaker, Not Those Of Someone Assembling An Archival Album. It's Worth Hearing And Having, But If You Want To Introduce Yourself To The Velvet Underground, The 1989 Collection The Best Of The Velvet Underground: Words And Music By Lou Reed Is A Much Better Starting Point -- Or Simply Listen To Their Four Original Studio Albums, All Of Which Are In Print And Readily Available." AMG Review By Mark Deming. more

Velvet Underground
New - LP - SE 4617
Sealed 1969 Stereo Original. “Upon First Release, The Velvet Underground's Self-Titled Third Album Must Have Surprised Their Fans Nearly As Much As Their First Two Albums Shocked The Few Mainstream Music Fans Who Heard Them. After Testing The Limits Of How Musically And Thematically Challenging Rock Could Be On Velvet Underground & Nico And White Light/White Heat, This 1969 Release Sounded Spare, Quiet, And Contemplative, As If The Previous Albums Documented Some Manic, Speed-Fueled Party And This Was The Subdued Morning After. But Lou Reed's Lyrical Exploration Of The Demimonde Is As Keen Here As On Any Album He Ever Made, While Displaying A Warmth And Compassion He Sometimes Denied His Characters. "Candy Says," "Pale Blue Eyes," And "I'm Set Free" May Be More Muted In Approach Than What The Band Had Done In The Past, But "What Goes On" And "Beginning To See The Light" Made It Clear The VU Still Loved Rock & Roll, And "The Murder Mystery" (Which Mixes And Matches Four Separate Poetic Narratives) Is As Brave And Uncompromising As Anything On White Light/White Heat. This Album Sounds Less Like The Velvet Underground Than Any Of Their Studio Albums, But It's As Personal, Honest, And Moving As Anything Lou Reed Ever Committed To Tape.” Richie Unterberger, AMG. more

1968 (East Coast w/Air-Brushed Torso) Stereo Original Housed In Gatefold Jacket. The Velvet Underground & Nico is the debut studio album by the American rock band the Velvet Underground and German singer Nico, released in March 1967 by Verve Records. Produced by Andy Warhol and Tom Wilson, the album is noted for its avant-garde sound, blending rock, art, and experimental music. The record includes tracks that highlight themes of urban life, drug use, and unconventional sexuality, showcasing the band's raw and gritty approach to music. Lou Reed's songwriting combined with the experimental use of instruments like John Cale's electric viola contribute to its distinctive sound. Despite its initial commercial failure, the album has since become highly influential, often cited as one of the greatest and most influential albums in the history of rock music. Songs like "Heroin," "I'm Waiting for the Man," and "Venus in Furs" have been praised for their innovative and boundary-pushing content, both musically and lyrically. The inclusion of Nico's unique vocal contributions on songs such as "Femme Fatale" and "All Tomorrow's Parties" adds to the album's eclectic and groundbreaking nature. The Velvet Underground & Nico remains an enduring classic, representing a significant milestone in the evolution of alternative and experimental rock music. more

Sealed Alternate Version Of VU's Debut Album. This Version Was Taken From The Norman Dolph Acetate. From The Liner Notes: “Here We Present The Original Album Taken From The Acetate Version With It's Original Running Order. ‘European Son’ Opens The Album, Which Is A Completely Different Take Than The Released Version. It Has A Bluesier Structure That Builds More Gracefully And Is Several Minutes Longer. 'Black Angel’s Death Song’ Is A Different Mix To The Finished Tune. ‘All Tomorrow’s Parties’ Again Is A Different Mix To The Released Version. ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ Has A Radically Different Sound That Has Less Echo On Nico’s Vocals And The Backing Vocals Are Lower In The Mix. ‘Heroin’ Is A Completely Different Version. The Guitar Line Is Different, Vocal Inflections Are Different And Contain Some Different Lyrics. The Drumming Is More Primitive And Runs Parallel With A Tambourine. ‘Femme Fatale’ Is Also A Radically Different Mix. The Percussion Is More Prominent And The Background Vocals Used In A Peppier Way. ‘Venus In Furs’ Is A Completely Different Version. The Vocal Accents Are Different. Instrumentation More Based Around John Cale’s Violin Than The Guitar, As In The Released Version. ‘I’m Waiting For The Man’ Is A Completely Different Version. The Guitar Line Is Completely Different And Some Of The Lyrics Also. No Drums, Just Tambourine And A Bluesy Guitar Solo. ‘Run Run Run’ Is A Different Mix To The Released Version. What Also Changes The Feel Of The Album Is The Running Order. This Original Version Starting With 'European Son' And With The Absence Of The Lighter Cut 'Sunday Morning' That Opened The Released Version, Gives The Album Darker Feel. Which One Is Better? That Is Up To You To Decide. But Now For The First Time Since 1966 You Can Hear The Dreamscape That The Band And Mr. Andy Warhol Had In Store For Us. So Sit Back, Peel Slowly And Listen To This Lost Masterpiece In All It's Unripened” more

Reissue On Blue And Silver T Label. Unable To Confirm Exact Year As the '98, '00 And 2011 Have Almost Identical Matrix Info. "The World Of Pop Music Was Hardly Ready For The Velvet Underground's First Album When It Appeared In The Spring Of 1967, But While The Velvet Underground And Nico Sounded Like An Open Challenge To Conventional Notions Of What Rock Music Could Sound Like (Or What It Could Discuss), 1968's White Light/white Heat Was A No-Holds-Barred Frontal Assault On Cultural And Aesthetic Propriety. Recorded Without The Input Of Either Nico Or Andy Warhol, White Light/white Heat Was The Purest And Rawest Document Of The Key Velvets Lineup Of Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, And Maureen Tucker, Capturing The Group At Their Toughest And Most Abrasive. The Album Opens With An Open And Enthusiastic Endorsement Of Amphetamines (Startling Even From This Group Of Noted Drug Enthusiasts), And Side One Continues With An Amusing Shaggy-Dog Story Set To A Slab Of Lurching Mutant R&B ("The Gift"), A Perverse Variation On An Old Folktale ("Lady Godiva's Operation"), And The Album's Sole "Pretty" Song, The Mildly Disquieting "Here She Comes Now." While Side One Was A Good Bit Darker In Tone Than The Velvets' First Album, Side Two Was Where They Truly Threw Down The Gauntlet With The Manic, Free-Jazz Implosion Of "I Heard Her Call My Name" (Featuring Reed's Guitar Work At Its Most Gloriously Fractured), And The Epic Noise Jam "Sister Ray," 17 Minutes Of Sex, Drugs, Violence, And Other Non-Wholesome Fun With The Loudest Rock Group In The History Of Western Civilization As The House Band. White Light/white Heat Is Easily The Least Accessible Of The Velvet Underground's Studio Albums, But Anyone Wanting To Hear Their Guitar-Mauling Tribal Frenzy Straight With No Chaser Will Love It, And Those Benighted Souls Who Think Of The Velvets As Some Sort Of Folk-Rock Band Are Advised To Crank Their Stereo Up To Ten And Give Side Two A Spin."
