1962 Original In Laminated Cover. The album consists of jazz interpretations of the music from the 1959 Brazilian film "Black Orpheus," which was based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice but set in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival. Vince Guaraldi, a jazz pianist and composer, was approached by Fantasy Records to record an album based on the film's soundtrack. Guaraldi assembled his trio, which featured Monty Budwig on bass and Colin Bailey on drums, and recorded the album in just two days. "Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus" became a commercial success, reaching number 14 on the Billboard 200 chart and earning Guaraldi a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance. The album's single, "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," also became a hit, reaching number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album's success helped establish Guaraldi as a prominent jazz musician and composer, and he would go on to compose the score for the beloved "Peanuts" television specials. Today, "Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus" is considered a classic jazz album and a landmark in the fusion of Brazilian and jazz music. more
